Can 2 people be registered owners of the same car?

Options
I'm after a bit of advice please.

We are in the process of buying a new car for me to be the main driver and my husband to have occasional use ( he has his own company car).

Previously all my cars have belonged to me and insurance has been straight forward.

This time my husband is taking out finance from Citroen and we were wondering if this will effect my insurance. I will by trying to insure a car I don't own. Will my husband own a car he technically doesn't insure and will the finance agreement allow this? Obviously I should be talking to the finance and insurance companies, but there are closed at the moment, hence this post.

Basically if we co-own the car then the insurance shouldn't be a problem, should it? Can you have two names on the V5?

Thanks in advance :)

You cannot live as I have lived an not end up like me.

Oi you lot - please :heart:GIVE BLOOD  - you never know when you and yours might need it back! 67 pints so far.

Registered Keeper is a known term and there can only be one.

Registered Keeper does not have to be the same person as the owner.

There can of course be joint owners.

But Registered Owner? Never heard of that one.

  • No you can only have one registered keeper now.

You used to be able to have joint keepers (eg husband and wife) but this was changed upon the introduction of the new style V5C logbook in 2004.

  • Dont imagine that PSA will want anyone other than the named on the finance agreement being the registered keeper.

You will still be able to insure it, but some insurance cos will load the premium (or refuse cover) if the registered keeper is not the policy holder

The only exception is if the car is owned by the spouse, then there is no difference. I've insured my wife's car (and vice versa) for years, and the premiums are the same, (I have got online quotes for both so we've never bothered swopping)
  • Surely the Registered Keeper is the one that takes out the insurance? Named drivers then added. If OP's husband is purchasing the car, unless he puts it in her name, then he will have to take out the insurance and Op will be a named driver.

No, no problem insuring a car owned by the spouse. Her car, documents in her name, but my insurance, I'm the main driver, and my NCB, and she's a named driver. The opposite is also true. My car, my name on the documents, her insurance, she's the main driver, her NCB, and I'm a named driver.

Never knew that - thought you could only insure a car in your own name. Live and learn I guess.

Absolutely not the case. We use a car my dad owns, it's registered in his name and I insure it
