Hope this helps.
Jeez, you do make me laugh - excellent. But ridiculously important when writing for uni.
India.
I was always told:
split the essay into 100-150 [ish] word sections.
the first says what you are going to say
the last says what you have said
the middle, spilt into half - one quote per 100-150 word section and half should agree with what you say and half should pose a counter view and you should say why you do not agree with it.
so, simplistically; for a 1000 word essay
150 words on what the essay will say
150 on an agreeing quote
150 on a counter quote
150 on another agreeing quote
150 on a counter quote
250 on your conclusions from the 4 quotes above.
then reference, and reference properly; using the system that they would have told you about at the start.
As you get deeper into uni it gets more complicated; but a first year essay needs to be simple and formulaic; unless you are a genius.
Write the essay plan - every time, so that you know what you are going to say and how, before you put pen to paper [or fingers to keyboard] on the essay itself.
As you progress, you can get into different ways of quoting; direct vs indirect etc; but keep it as simple as possible. I used to be told to say it as if you were telling friends [keeping it simple], when you write your plan so that you get the points across as simply as possible.0 -
