move downstairs bathroom upstairs. shortage of windows!

We are in the process of buying a 3 bed house with a downstairs bathroom. We plan to move it upstairs by making 2 of the bedrooms on the back of the house, slightly smaller.
There is currently 2 windows on the back of the house - 1 in each back bedroom and we want to squeeze in a bathroom too.
I'm a FTB so I'm unclear... do I need any kind of approval to create a window for my new bathroom? Also - would anybody have any idea of cost to install a new window? Any watchouts? All advice is appreciated :-)
Many thanks!

Hi
We bought our 3 bedroomed house with the bathroom downstairs and partioned off some of the master bedroom at the front of the house to make a bathroom, adding an extra window for the bathroom.
At the time we did not need planning permission or building regs, but......this was 20 yrs ago!
I would ring your local planning dept to check what is needed these days.
Sorry i can't be of more help

You will need planning permission to add a window to an outside wall.
You will need planning permission to move the bathroom too, if the plumbing layout is altered.0 -
You may need building regs appro as there will be new plumbing and electrics. Also remember a bathroom with bath, basin and WC will need a floor area 2m x 2m.If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

And Buildings Regulations compliance.
Talk to the Planning dept, and a local builder.0 -

That is not true. You may need building regulations approval if the outside drainage layout is altered, but not internally. Certainly not planning permission unless you need Listed Building Consent.0 -

I told my husband that twice today. Once when I fixed the boiler.
And once when I picked the gravel for the drive. But then changed my mind. But I'm allowed to do that because I'm a girl.
But I did kick his a** on the boiler thing.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

You don't have to have a window in a bathroom. Many people have en-suites with no window so there is no reason why you have to have a window. Think, you don't normally look out of a bathroom window as its obscured glass. You only have a window for light (use electric lights) and ventilation (fit an extractor).I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. True, a bathroom is the room in the house that you spend the least time in. For most people that's about ten minutes day, maximum. As long as you can fit an extractor fan you really don't need a window. There's plenty of clever things you can do with lights and glass to construct a fake one0

Perhaps one of those sun-tubes would be an option, for a bathroom with no window ....Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0
