In Sainsbury's it is usually with cream and creme fraiche - I usually find it on the top shelf.

In Tesco it is usually on the shelf above the milk.

In ASDA it took four members of staff to search and find it for me - not sure where it was.

It's always worth asking if you can't find it.

  • I can get it in my Sainsbury's - however often quite well hidden.

BUT you can use Elmlea - this pretends to be cream but if you actually look at the ingredients it is about 95% buttermilk - I've used it in baking before, works fine.

As others have commented, it can be hit and miss as to whether Sainsburys/Asda/Tesco have any butter milk in stock - although all my local stores do have it from time to time. If they don't, this has worked well for me as a substitute (tried it in an American Pancake recipe):

    Ingredients:

    250ml Milk
1 Tablespoon white vinegar or lemon juice
Add the two and let them stand for five minutes.

 I thought sourdough was just flour, water and salt?

  • hi susanc

well, i did have a mental note to buy this one day to make sourdough bread, maybe it was for another type of bread! lol
as a foodie, i knew it'd be great to eat with nice homemade soup rather than buy supermarket bread.. (love morrison's Spelt & Rye bread - mmh!)

if you know a recipe, then pls send it my way.. thanks!

Sainsbury's and Tesco's sell it. I use it to make buttermilk scones.
If you can't get it use milk with a little lemon juice to sour it, works just as well.
