I'm delighted that a website such as this exists. I've used the information on it to reclaim some bank charges and I'll probably use it again. I agree that it is a good thing that a 'green and ethical' board has been set-up but I think that this alone on this site is not enough to navigate and inform users to/of a more ethical consuming lifestyle. I've done a quick look through several pages of information on this site and there is no mention of 'ethics' (or similar) on any of the pages. Martin, if you are serious about apprising people about ethical alternatives, I suggest that you include information about such options within your information pages.
Many of us are aware of the horrendous business practices that see certain banks funding the arms trade, despotic regimes and the debt of many impoverished countries; or of the energy corporations that are implicated in shocking acts of militancy across the planet.
Of course, we want British consumers to be debt free, but surely we - the indebted - are somewhere down the line all part of the repressed? The connections between us are not so hard to make. I didn't want this message to sound hysterical but I guess it will to some. Others, though, may agree with my points of view: I'll be happy to hear all opinions.
Once again, thanks for the site but please consider making these changes.0 -

Welcome to the forum.
I for one have no idea what your quote above means.
We - the indebted are part of the repressed????
ditto the one below;
or of the energy corporations that are implicated in shocking acts of militancy across the planet.
I presume it is a rant at the evils of our capitalist society; but it sounds rather like a quote from a Green Peace activist suffering from dyslexia.0 -
Hi Cardew, thanks for the welcome.
I wasn't making a direct connection between the indebted and the (politically) repressed (hence the "somewhere down the line" remark), but I don't think that there is a great leap from one category to the other. Banks charging us £35 for a service that costs them less than £5 is economic repression, after all. For so many reasons, we simply must have a bank and, resultantly, we are at their mercy to treat us fairly...yet we exist for them to make a profit from, and a whopping profit at that. There's a political metaphor in there, I think, that the people of too many countries around the world will understand, albeit in this example we get a much better deal of it than they do. And surely when we know that banks are acting immorally - not simply by overcharging us in the UK but by colluding with violent political regimes across the world - we must take a stand for the people and against the corporations? After all, had you and I lived in Burma or Indonesia when British and American banks were supporting the violent regimes there, chances are we'd be on the end of the suffering too. Solidarity can be found in some small way by choosing the 'right' bank, clothing manufacturer, or whatever.
I'm not sure what you mean about dyslexia, though. As I'm sure you know, there is plenty of evidence linking energy corporations to human rights abuses across the world. Shell's involvement in Nigeria is not the only example. All too often, our glorious media chooses not to discuss it which, in my book, makes it vital that websites such as this brings these things to people's attention.0 -

I bought it about a year ago and it's paid back every penny i spent on it many many times over!
On the same note, here is a website that also helps to save cash and save the planet: energy-savingtips.com Hope it's useful for someone.:beer:
Sorry, I can't post it as a link because I'm a newbie to these forums.0
