New kitchen extension - Builders NOT plastering the whole wall!

Just had an extension - new kitchen units awaiting delivery & plaster boards are nearly all in place on the new walls - but the builders say they wont be plastering/skimming the boards behind the floor kitchen cabinets!

Only above the worktops and wall units!

What if we want to make changes / remove units at a later date - do we then have to find a plasterer to do the walls behind the units???

MAybe I should cut the £20 notes in half when I pay them??

  • You are the customer and you are paying! Ask them to fully board the walls.

It seems like a cheap fix to me and not a proper job.

Trying to get this straight

The plasterboards are already in place , waiting for the skim coat
Builder wants only to do the top half??
His reason ?? no one is ever going to see the bottom half
    Or
That the units will sit back on the plasterboard.??
It would be easier for the plasterer to do the whole wall in one go and the cost of materials is small .

I would talk to the builder .... with an open mind !!
    Hear his explanation.

Ps he probably wont be installing skirting boards for the same reason.

Its your job, who is the builder to say that it only requires plastering down to the work top level. If you are paying then it is you who says what you require, not the builder. The only thing that does occur to me is that the quotation might have only specified that the visible area would be skimmed. I assume that you do have a quotation in writing.
I am not sure that skirting boards would normally be fitted where units are going to go. If they were not fitted, then it would make sense, as the backs of the units would not then have to be recessed around the skirting.

    What does the quote say?

We would generally do the same, Tiles stick better to unplastered plasterboard

You are quite right, they do stick better to un-plastered plaster board. When I tried to remove some tiles from a bedsitter flat that I had built and convert it back into a standard room. The action of removing the tiles pulled all the paper off from he plaster board., which then fell to pieces and had to be replaced. I shall not make that mistake again

The areas that need to be tiled I have no issue with - but the rest of the wall? I want to look pretty.

The walls will be fully boarded - just not fully skimmed!

If he says that it was not part of the quote, how much extra should he charge for approx a total of 12M2 of plaster skim? (the boards are all in place)

Just looking for an approximate price / idea

Sweet Jesus. If a plasterer had to come out especially, he'd probably charge at least £100 but if he is already there? That's just stupid not to if you want it and it's just a couple of hours work, if that.

It just sounds like a joke. We have plastered all the walls before putting in the kitchen and the carpenter actually put in skirting behind the kitchen units just in case the room layout changes, then the owners at the time won't have to replace the entire room skirting (it's a big room) just to make it match! I've paid for it but I like his sensitivity.

You builder is having a laugh frankly. If you want it plastered, have it plastered - even with the tiling you're unlikely to be using tiles that are heavy enough to really benefit from the extra grip.

Still not clear , you want the wall to look pretty , even if its hidden by the units??

I agree with idea that as the customer who is paying the bill , your wishes are paramount. But still would give the builder a chance to justify his thinking.
