FTB Needs advice on mortgage and defaults

I currently have a dispute open with Orange regarding cancellation of some mobile contracts. The sum is £800 and is unpaid. Its not that i cannot pay the £800, i just refuse to do so. I have written to them explaining why i do not owe them any money and that it was a mistake on their part due to which these contracts were cancelled. They even have my £150 deposit which i haven't got back. Everytime i write to them, they say they will get back to me but never do.
I looked at my credit file and saw that have placed a default on my file. A default warning letter was never sent out. I only realised when my application for an AMEX credit card got declined. I have no loans, debts or outstanding credit card balances. I have a perfect credit history except this which is affecting my credit rating.

i am a FTB and wanted to buy a house soon. I know if i apply for a mortgage, i am likely to get declined. My Salary is 45K and my partners is 24K (who has an excellent credit rating). The house we want is £200K and i have a 15% deposit.

I had a chat with a financial adviser, and he told me that i will have to apply for the mortgage in writing, explaining this black mark on my credit file and saying that its there not because of me having any money issues, but because of an open dispute with Orange. Stating that this does not effect my finances and also include all letters ive written to Orange and any correspondence from them. It will take long but Its only then when i can stand a chance to get a mortgage.

What i wanted to know was that is this the right approach ?

If i do that, shall i make a joint application or a single application with my partner?

If i get declined, will her credit history be effected too ?

What are the best deals that i can currently, i wanted to fix for 3-5 years ?

any other help or advice regarding this issue would be really appreciated.

    Yes

Doesn't matter although joint would likely make it easier.

    No

Better to get professional advice rather from an internet forum.

When you wrote to Orange, did you send all your letters recorded delivery, and give them a deadline to reply by?

Do you have proof that you cancelled the contract?

On some mortgages, I've seen the question "Have you ever been turned down for a mortgage or a loan?"
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Thats the thing, i did not cancel the contract, it was done by them and now they want me to pay for it. thats what the whole dispute is about. I do not owe them any money. Inturn, they have my £150 deposit which i haven't received back yet :(

I sent everything by recorded delivery. I have got all the reciepts etc. Their reply is a standard one. "Your account is being handled by department xxx and we will pass your details onto them".
