The dog would not be at home alone more then 4 hrs at any one time.
My dog used to be fine while I was at school. The problem was only later when I started working and my boss required me to work 10 hrs a day.
So is it only SAHM and pensioners who can have a dog?
You said you both work full time apart from your partner working from a home a few days. How would the dog only be alone for four hours?0 -
Unfortunately on this board you are treated like the village idiot for even thinking of getting a pup if you dont meet certain posters criteria.
I think people are just giving their opnions. If someone only does something because people on an internet forum tell them then they need help. If you don't like it because the village idiots don't agree with you then no-one is forcing you to look at this website. I am sure there are other forums who are more intune with your opnions.0 -
To clear it up - The dog would be at home by itself without being let out for 4 hrs at any one time. However as I said, the dog would be at home by itself for longer period of time only maybe twice a week.
Fire Fox - I considered the fact that I will have to pick the right breed. We actually spoke about it last night with my husband and we are going to have a look and word at local RSPCA. We will be getting a young dog rather then puppy, if we will be getting a dog at all.
I've spoken also to several of my friends who work full time and have dogs about what they do about the dog being at home by itself during the day - as I know the dogs and they seem perfectly happy to me. All of them said that usually they have someone to pop in during the day, but even then it doesn't happen every time (but it does 99% of time) and the dog is absolutely fine. As long as you spend lot of time with him after and take them for proper walks the dogs are very happy.
2 of these friends also have rescue dogs.
They said that they never thought that the dog will be worse of with them in loving home even if they work then in rescue centre where the dog doesn't really get that much of a chance of individual attention, certainly not every day for several hours as it is the case in a family.
The RSPCA might still turn us down, but we will have to wait and see.0 -

Surely you aren't identifying yourself as a village idiot are you?
And for a BALANCED board, I still post so that others dont just get to hear rescue rescue rescue and what totally and utterly irresponsible owners they are for not spaying/neutering and heavens forbid - admit to buying a dog from a responsible breeder0 -

Amy, you dont have to clear anything up with anyone on here, we are just names on a forum.
There are many rescue centres who will give dogs to working couples as long as you can satisfy that provision has been made for the dog. Theres amny a rescue, not just the RSPCA, theres the Dogs Trust, many Tears, and many many more smaller local rescues.
If you are looking for a rescue - take a look at dogpages
If you are looking to buy a pedigree pup then you need to go via the breed club. Once again you may find it difficult to get a breeder to sell to you but there are those who will sell to working couples if once again you can satisfy them that provision has been made0 -
If the RSPCA do reject you for working full-time please try other rescues, not just the big name ones as often the smaller or breed rescues are able consider you individual situation rather than having rigid policies.0

That sounds very promising, good luck! :ADeclutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -

I think that your past you have had to move and leave dogs (well not dump them you know what i mean) but your settled now.
can your parents/family pop in every day for a dog walk?
I had grief on here when i first thought about perry the pup, and I'm glad people cared enough to do that (really i didn't see it as an insult).
I was working but at 4 hours a day, but out for 5 ish hours, but i would sneak home half way through to check on him or my OH would pop in, i no longer work through ill health so am home full time, only now i struggle taking him out for a mid day pee/poop, so I'm looking at professional dog walkers to see which one is suitable to give perry a good run every single day, but whilst i am home perry and me have lots of cuddles.
Good luck on finding the right dog for your family, i hope it works outLife is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?0 -
I do homechecks for various rescue centres and have a rescue dog myself from the RSPCA. The RSPCA WILL reject you for a young dog, they may however consider you for an older dog, at least that's what they told me when I visted one of their rescue centres a few years ago. They will not consider you if the dog will be left alone for more than 4 hours, please note someone popping in for an hour or so mid day then leaving the dog alone again is not an answer. If you think about it, it really isn't fair on the dog who needs a loving home and to be able to interact with his pack (family) not be left at home being lonely all day.
I really wanted a dog badly when I worked in London but didn't get one as it would not have been fair, I had to wait 15 years until I retired early and moved to Dorking in the countryside. The problem (and benefit) of dogs is that they are very loyal and devoted to you and that brings a HUGE responsibility as they become very unhappy and stressed if left alone frequently.Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0 -

Well thats good for you. However I have seen lots of posts disagreeing with your views but none that have insulted you. Maybe I miss them. However calling a group of people "village idiots" for disagreeing with you really shines you in a light.0
