Free photo editing package, which is the best?

Hi, I had a good photo editing package (generally cropping and the like) but it does not work on Vista so I've been looking around online and there seem to be a lot of packages to choose from - preferable a free one though.
Generally I have to copy/save photos from my suppliers websites and then crop them down or enlarge them and upload them to my own website.
My windows package has one on but it is not as good as the last one I had and I cannot seem to get to grips with it - I would like to be able to open multiple pictures for editing and saving.
Anyone got any ideas for a good photo package that can do this. Thanks.

I use http://www.irfanview.com/index.htm, can crop, rotate, add visual effects, read most formats as well as play media files by installing additional plugins. Here's a list of what Irfanview's features: http://www.irfanview.com/main_what_is_engl.htm0

Have a look at Picasa 3 from Google, it's free and you can do some great things with it.0

If you don't mind paying for good software take a look at Photoshop Elements from Adobe. It does almost everything the full Photoshop does.0

How many times does this crop up a week, does anyone use the search facilities?!
Paint.net most user friendly free app, the the GIMP.
Photoshop free to use online at www.photoshop.com
Photoshop Elements is great for home users, great prices on Amazon, and it's worth every penny.
But if you are a power user, don't get into the idea it does almost everything full Photoshop does, it certainly doesn't. I use Photoshop all done long everyday, and elements is great for home users, but as a professional I'd not look twice at it!0 -

I could have but I didn't. Never mind, you did not have to read the question OR answer.
Thanks for the advice people, I already had Picassa but did not know how to use it, I thought it was just for putting stuff in albums and being able to post them to the web for people to look at. I've had a play around with it and it is going to be perfect for what I need it for - in fact it has everything I need it for and the photos are easy to get to and edit so that is great. Thank you.0 -
Best free alternative to photoshop is called GIMP - grab it from gimp.org
VERY good free alternative. It is open-source so completely free and legal to use, download, share, etc.0 -
^ as is Paint.net and both already covered in earlier posts...0

This is true, but it helps to educate people in the art of research
As often it'll save you time and trouble and money.
No one is being unkind, if you took it that way, but lots of us on here provide a lot of advice for free, and 9 times out of 10, the question has already cropped up recently and there are a huge set of discussion threads, it's always best to search and see if it's been answered before (as per the FAQ of the forum), as you'll find more detail than asking the same again, as most people won't have time to regurgitate the same info over and over again.
I've just searched for all the posts mentioning free image editing software and I've 148 threads (not posts), it even cropped up yesterday...0
