I second this! I've been doing a lot of ringing around lately, and have been quoted between £15 and £22.50.

I've registered with my local vets incase of emergency and with Vets4Pets for the vaccinations etc.
That is what annoys me about out-of-hours work. It is the least profitable part of the business, has greatest bad debt and is the part of the job that is worst - who wants to get up in the middle of the night and then try to work the next day? Vets4Pets are getting the nice easy work, the profitable, regular hours work and the only time you will see the local vet is for the bad stuff. Not very fair on the local practice who are putting in the effort to see their own clients / patients OOH. 2/3 of all OOH calls that I used to see never came to see me any other time yet I was expected to get up out of my bed, miss my tea etc at a moments notice to see their "emergencies". Sorry, but that annoys me. If you use Vets4Pets for the simple things, use them for OOH and don't abuse the service provided by the local practice for their own clients.

Anyone know if you are allowed to be registered with two vets?
You can be registered with as many as you want but to be ethical and for the vet to comply with RCVS guidelines, each vet needs to get your medical history from any other practice you have been to recently so as to avoid any duplicate tests, adverse drug reactions and to avoid being accused of supersession. It gets very complicated if you see more than 1 vet, but if you start seeing 3 or 4 different ones at different times, it can be dangerous to your pet. There is no problem with changing vets, just be open and honest with your new vet so that the full information can be obtained.
  • Don't blame you for being miffed Snowman2. Personally I always try to give my money to a local small buisness rather than a big chain but I guess when folks are hard up they have to make diffcult choices.

Sorry I wasn't trying to annoy anyone with my post. Maybe I've just picked an expensive vets, judging by the amount of people shocked at the price of vaccinations I was quoted from my local vets.
  • Fair enough, but use the emergency service provided by Vets4Pets.

Speaking as a nurse - Im with you snowman2 - we get that happen too. We are a specialist equine practice - the biggest in the area, and we have a lot of clients who use us for their emergencies only - in one way its flattering that they want us for their "big" stuff - but then why should we bust a gut to treat people that only use us when they have a problem (who usually are the ones who insist on a particular vet and kick up when that vet is busy!!)over our loyal, regular clients??!!!
Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup

Personally I use one vet. But to be fair this is a moneysaving website so it should promote people to get the best deal on everything. You wouldn't feel bad if someone always used HSBC but then got a savings account with Lloyds as they can get a better rate?
