Bed recommendations?

Hi all,

Am looking to buy a *small double* sized bed next week, no idea what I need! Does anyone have any recommendations of good places to go or places to avoid? I'm in Leicester & am looking to spend about £300
Just me, no partner & I like a nice comfy bed I can sink into rather than something too hard that i'm on iyswim, also hate wooden ones so divan is what I want!

Any help appreciated x

For the best value for money buy on line from an independent retailer, and get a bed that is made by a smaller independent manufacturer, as many of the big brands mass produce using automated processes, rather than make them by hand.

Their quality is fairly good, but they are over priced.

The good thing about forum threads is that even if the OP has already bought one, any advice can help anyone else who is after a mattress.

yep i've spent hours recently digging through previous threads you've contributed to Tim in my search for a new bed - all very useful and saved me making some expensive mistakes!

Not really had time to get out and try some beds yet to get more of an idea of what we are after so it's been put on the back burner for a week or two until we have the money to pay for it.

Can i ask you Tim... we have a problem with lack of storage in our bedroom. Currently we have a double bed with drawers in the bottom divan which is used for storing towels and bedding. I've got a feeling someone told us once that divans with storage in weren't advisable for some reason? Is this true? What would you advise as i'm considering either a king size divan with 4 drawers along the sides or a bed frame to match the rest of our bedroom furniture which doesn't have any drawers at all so would need some sort of storage solution underneath? In the past we've always had divans but my parents just came back from holiday somewhere with very comfortable beds on frames.. they had the beds out looking for the label to recommend me the mattress but couldn't find any unfortunately!

Favourite for divan at moment from recommendations is KozeeSleep Duchess (or another kozeesleep) - these we can try at beds direct then search for better internet deals if we like.

Bed frame that matches bedroom furniture is this one: http://www.pinesolutions.co.uk/acatalog/Oxbury_5_Pine_Bed.html .. not sure on their mattresses but of the one's available as options we would likely go for the Regency one - obviously i could buy a mattress anywhere though.

Advantage of the frame being it should hopefully last many years and we can just replace the mattress as necessary which would probably save us money over time. Also it has a headboard already (something we dont have at the moment so the wall is all marked with blue dye out of the bed linen where the pillows rest!). The real disadvantage is the lack of built in storage though but maybe i'd be better off with a cupboard elsewhere for the bedding.

I don't know who told you that storage divans aren't advisable. All I can think is that it was someone who is trying to sell bedsteads. A divan base is a wooden frame with castors and a top (this can be springs on a sprung base). Any storage fits within the frame and doesn't chage the integrity of the base at all.

Have you actually tried any beds yet?

It is difficult to tell from the photo, but the bed in the picture looks a bit flimsy for the price.

A divan set (base and mattress) can work out far cheaper than buying a bedstead and mattress. As long as there is nothing wrong with the base you can just change the mattress, as a divan base is suitable for any type of mattress, but a slatted bedstead isn't suitable for pocket sprung mattresses without modification. You can pick up headboards at very reasonable prices these days.

But i had a feeling someone told me it made it weaker..not sure who..might have been someone in dreams where we bought the silentnight rubbish from in the first place! Thinking about it we had to wait weeks for it so maybe he was just trying to flog what was in stock which didn't have drawers!

Nope..not had a chance to but intend to before we go buying anything anywhere. It's not likely to be for a few weeks though unfortunately.

I really don't think it will be flimsy..if the rest of the range of furniture is anything to go by it will be solid and well made with proper joints - but i agree it's not very clear from the picture.

I get your point ...though this time round because the miracoil divan base has had it too we need the whole lot! I think a platform top would be best. I in particular tend to plonk myself down on the edge which can't have helped. Didn't realise you couldn't put pocket sprung straight on it..what would be the modification?

Divan with storage seems like the best use of space at the moment then. It's still not totally ideal as to access the back drawers will mean pulling the bed out to get past the cabinet but not a huge deal if we put spare bedding i suppose. What would be ideal is an ottoman-style storage divan but not sure it would fit into our budget (don't really know what it is yet..depends how generous our wedding guests are!).

Andy - sorry, butting in here. My mom bought the KozeeSleep Duchess earlier this year and she is over the moon with it. Says it's the best bed she's ever had - considering she's 85 she's tried a few including Dunlopillo when they were the bees knees years ago. I haven't seen it myself as I've not been able to get over to visit her but from the photos it's a lovely looking bed, and she loves the feel of the mattress.

urm yep where do you think my initial recommendation came from in the first place :D:p . It seems to be supported by a few other posts on the forums from what i saw. I don't want to spend a huge amount but don't want to go to cheap either.

But then different people like different types of beds with different firmness etc so definitely need to go try some out. Anyway that's the one make that isn't anything to do with Silentnight that i'm aware i can go try out locally and have seen recommendations for.

My parents bought a new bed a few months ago that they are very happy with but it's a Vi-Spring which is way beyond our own budget! Nearest dealer is Lenley's in canterbury - checked their website and nearly fainted at the price tags!
