Yes, some gooseberry varieties are very thorny but other varieties like PAX, a red gooseberry are virtually thornless. It's worth Googling to try and find other thornless varieties and suppliers if that is going to be an issue.
  • Have a look at Blackmoor nursery.

Cheers Lotus-eater, you've just cost me £130!

    Calamondin

I'm very tempted by this myself... :D

Thank you so much for this! We are going to be buying our own mini-orchard too - never imagined we could get four fruit trees for £35 (plus, apparently, 10% cashback with Topcashback too) !!!

If anyone can wait until the spring, then earlier this year Aldi were selling a huge range of bare root fruit trees for £4 each. They weren't quite as pretty as garden centre trees-rather wonky trunks- but I quite like that, as it adds character. I bought a Victoria plum, three apples and a morello cherry. They haven't flowered or fruited this year (the apple blossom was already out on established plants when I bought them) but I now have five fruit trees established and ready to go. I hope. ;)

Lidl had similar offer as Aldi

However my bare root pear is now just a long dead twig, never did get leaves etc, but the apple I had previously, and red currants are OK

I like the look of Blackmoor ursery, and as I am not too far away may just pop along there one day soon, fancy an apricot, anyone grown one?

Article in Garden News about them, some new varieties for UK now available

  • Just to update, my mini orchard from Garden Bargains arrived last week and I now have four lovely little trees in pots on my patio waiting for spring! Very exciting!

  • hi everyone,

Just a quick question, do your dwaft fruit trees produce a lot of fruit?

I know they're an investment because they should last yrs but dont want to buy one then not get much off it.

I'm looking for a apple, pear & cherry to grow in pots on my patio which is approx 12 x 3m
