I also have problems with my hands.

It is possible to get hand mixers with stands so that you don't have to hold them, but check the power, some of them are a bit wimpy. For mixing dough you can't beat a kenwood chef or similar type machine. To be blunt, I have never found a FP that could cope with dough (I've had several Braun, Magimix etc) they're just too small. My personal choice is a stick, a BM, and a chef.

BTW I struggle with my morphy BM, only the fast program works for me, and having weak hands means that I struggle to get the nasty fancy folding paddle out of the loaf. I'll go back to a panny when this one dies.

  • Only get a FP if you have enough space to store it on a worksurface - otherwise lugging it in and out of cupboards is a real nightmare, especially if you have problems with your joints. And don't get me started on washing the things up!

I wanted a Kenwood Chef when my 30yr old 10th hand one broke down, but a friend suggested a handheld - Kenwood do one which will mix 1lb of dough with bread hooks. To be honest, I've never regretted it and have enjoyed the £200 saved.

I have a stick blender, cheap BM (Hinari) and Kenwood hand mixer and make all my own bread, cakes, soup at a fraction of the cost and hassle of a food processer.

Ebay is a good source of second hand Kenwood Chefs, plus all the attachments. And I am totally convinced the bread you get using the KC to knead the dough plus baking in the oven beats 99% of BM bread hands down...so much so that I Freecycled my last bread machine.

My Kenwood Chef also grates, chops, mixes, whisks, liquidizes, peels spuds, makes sausages and pasta, minces and there's even a cream maker and grain mill somewhere. You can get attachments to grind coffee and a juicer as well. Yes it's best if you leave it out on a workspace and yes, it's a bad idea to put the attachments in the dishwasher. (I ruined a perfectly good mixing paddle that way, not to mention my best camping pans, pah.)

  • If you've still got the paddle and camping pans, you could try giving them a light clean with a brillo pad - it should get the worst of the oxidation off; I'd then give them give them a light grease with something like olive oil, veg oil or lard, to re-surface them, but that may not be appropriate if you're going to want mix copious amounts of egg whites straight after.

DH is a baker and swears by a Kenwood Chef
with a dough hook attached for breadmaking. In
fact for every kind of mixing, whisking etc

We also have a Panasonic breadmaker or I should say
I have it makes great bread just like everyone on here
said it would, look on ebay for a good secondhand one.

you need a minimum of an 800 watt motor for bread making
according to my live in expert here,The chef has the right
sized motor strong enough for this.

another vote for a kenwood over a fp and an oven over a bm

since I got a stick blender with a chopper attachment I rarely use my fp...

  • I got a kenwood food processor for christmas and a panasonic acouple of months later (late christmas) I have athritis so know how you feel. I started off with the food processor on the unit and the breadmaker on top of the freezer. I havejust swapped them round as I use the panasonic every single day, but the processor 2 of 3 times a week.
When I had the Morphy richards breadmaker, I used to cook it in the oven too. But with the panasonic you don't need to it comes out perfectly every time. So what I am saying, I think, is that I found I am using the breadmaker more. Thogh the food processor is fantastic for chopping large amounts of onions for chutney.

Another vote for the Morphy Richards Fastbake here!

Made a loaf every week (plus pizza bases) for 2.5 years now and still going strong, it cost me £40 (may have been special offer) but it's paid for itself several times over now

One thing I think puts people off is the recipes in the manual in my opinion are way off... I use quite a different mix for a wholemeal loaf and EVERYONE comments how good it is
