which one to go for?!!!!

Evening all, I've been looking at buying a breadmaker and saved my money, so started having a peek tonight. The cheapest one i've found was about 30quid, but the reviews on it are less than good! Sooooo it them jumps from 30 to about 50quid. HOWEVER- I am also going to be buying a food processor and again after reading the reviews most of the ppl use their FP for mixing and 'kneading' the dough. As i make all my bread in the oven atm anyway im considering pooling my money together and just buying a really decent food processor. Does anyone have any views on this?
Would i be better buying both and if so what does everyone sugest?
Or just buying a FP and continue cooking my bread in the oven?
I've got about £100 for both items so advice would be much apriciated as i dont want to blow it on something that is pants! xxx

My MIL has 4 breadmakers and she swears and maons when she uses two of them.
She has just taken one back as when it cooks it smells like canabis !!!!!!!.

She swears by her Morphy Richards one. I have her old one as well and it has been great.

I have to admit i would not buy one i prefer the hand method and it tastes better to.

Go for the processer will serve you better imho.

I've just bought this week a morphy richards fast bake from amazon £49.99, first loaf could have saved a builder a few quid in bricks, 2nd was good and 3rd and subsequent loaves absolutely delicious.
Mama read so much about the dangers of drinking alcohol and eating chocolate that she immediately gave up reading.
  • thanks Quillion-honestly i think this is what i am going to do

Gizmo-i think i read that it takes a few attempts but as i already make them in the oven the only bonus about the BM would be it mixes!
  • hello  i am a long time lurker rather than an OS expert so take my witterings with a pinch of salt but...

I would suggest maybe using the money for a decent BM (I have the famed Panasonic SD255 - it is as amazing as everyone says - approx £80 last time I looked, may be cheaper now) and also buy a stick blender. You can get really cheap stick blenders but I have had trouble with them in the past and have bitten the bullet and bought a Kenwood one now.

I have a FP, BM and stick blender and definitely use the BM and stick blender the most (before I got the BM I used the FP for bread more than I used it for anything else though  anyone would think I lived on soup and bread...)

What are you planning on using the food processor for? If it's for soups etc, then a stick blender will be fine. If it's for cake-making, then that changes things...
  • I'd get whichever breadmaker turns up at the car-boot; workplace ('I'm chucking out a breadmaker, anyone want it?') or on Freecycle first. There are so many about, as they're the kind of thing people buy, think they're going to use all the time, and then never do.

As far as food processors go, I'd actually get a second-hand Kenwood chef if you don't have one (ditto - tip, car boot, newspaper, auction house, house clearance - expect to pay anything from a tenner to about £40, depending on venue/popularity) and, if you're serious about making dough, a bread hook. Check it carefully to make sure it's not oxidised , or you'll get grey stains on all your dough - if the hook is grey-ish, give it a light scrub with a brillo pad, then keep it clean and lightly oiled afterwards, and never put it in the dishwasher, as that's what ruins them in the first place!

Good luck, and enjoy the fruits of your labour!

I have a morphy fastbake and I love it - we do half and half bread/fruit bread and pizza dough the most, we also make rolls and the delicious apple plait recipe on here somewhere.

I've also done jam in it and the customer service from morphy is fab.

I like a softer loaf so I take mine out 10 mins before the bread cycle ends :p

However, there is a huge fanbase on here for the panny - surprised not to see a few of them already to be honest ;)

I'd like to try a loaf out the panny :D

  • Right just to clarify!- cooking wise, I've got my beloved stick blender which i use to make soups and the babies dinners, which, to be quite honest is all the time! We generally eat soup for lunch every day(although i make one huge batch a week and freeze it!) and Amelia's dinners are generally blended from what we eat with the stick.
I make prob one/two loafs a week by hand, this would be more but as i have problems with my joints so struggle with all the kneading. This is why i wanted a bread maker.
I make cakes, want to be able to mix the mixture without a flaming hand whisk!!!! again cus of the joints!
The main reason for the food processor, and to be fair i think it would be used more is that i can whisk cake mixes, chop veg, blend soups and mia's food, mix up all sorts.
If i go down the route of a 'decent' FP can i buy a bread making hook?
Mandragora-for once and once only i am being a real snob! I've not had chance to go to a carboot over the weekend due to illness and i desperatly want my new bits tomorrow! I got my last FP, left it with my exoh :( from a car boot, should have been 90quid got it for 35! So if i do go down the route of expencive FP i think i might try freecycle for a bread maker x

Poorandindenial- Ive got the stick, and cook my bread in the oven, why not splash out on a decent FP? ARGH!!!! im so torn!!!!!

greenbee- i shall be using the FP to make EVERYTHING! lol...shall also be using it to make your cakes when i get all the bits!

sourbrette- thanks for that hun, i've been looking at the morphy ones x

In that case, I'd get the largest capacity food processor that you can. A kenwood with a liquidiser attachment would probably be ideal, but not within your budget. Or a large magimix (again, i'm not sure they'd be within your budget). Given that it's going to get so much use, it might be worth waiting, working out exactly what you want (right down to the model and any extras) and then saving for it. You might be able to get something temporary via freecycle in the meantime.

BTW - do you still want those kitchen scales? I hadn't forgotten, but I still haven't managed to find any parcel tape! I might also have a turntable going spare, as I was given a very flashy one as a leaving present from work, and already had a basic one. Let me know if you want it!
  • I had a Morphy and the bread was never better than ok - it was more than ok for a couple of hours, but later in the same day it was horrible. I tried all sorts of tips but nothing helped. In the end Morphy died and I got a Panny, did nothing different and the bread is always lovely.
