Vegetarian Beef style Pieces

I don't think meat-eaters really want to eat stuff that tastes of dead animal either. Hence herbs, spices, sauces and the general alchemy of cooking. Otherwise you might as well just tear it raw off the bone with your teeth, after killing it of course. But then meat-eaters generally don't want to do that. Strange innit!
It can be quite a difficult transition to make once you have decided that ethically it doesn't feel right for something to be killed just to satisfy your tastebuds (eating meat is not a survival issue in this part of the world at least). So the fact you can still have a few old favourites like shepherds pie can make the transition easier. It can be hard to know what to cook as a new veggie! Eventually you learn all about Indian cooking which comes from a culture where vegetarianism is widespread and hence has lots of lovely dishes which don't require meat substitute.2015 wins: Jan: Leeds Castle tickets; Feb: Kindle Fire, Years supply Ricola March: £50 Sports Direct voucher April: DSLR camera June: £500 Bingo July: £50 co-op voucher0 -
Going back to the comment about Quorn "Beef Style Pieces", they're doing Seasoned Steak pieces at the moment in Sainsbury's with 25% off as a "introductory offer".
They had a load in mine reduced to £1 a pack yesterday, so I stocked up...no idea if they're actually nice or not, though...0 -

They're really nice, I put some on a pizza to make a fake 'meat feast' type thing! And good in pastas too.0 -
Have never understood why vegetarians want 'meat' flavoured products!!! Just eat meat !!!!!!!
I think there are probably loads of thing you will never understand. Do people ever pat you on the head after talking to you?The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

Just found this thread, but anyway let me explain to you how this just might be possible.
I became vegetarian because I couldn't stomach the thought of having something dead in my mouth and then swallowing it. It had nothing to do with ethics or disliking the taste. It was purely down to the fact that if I thought about the fact that there was a piece of an animal's corpse in my mouth it made me feel sick.
I like the taste of meat. I don't like touching dead things never mind putting them in my mouth.
Luckily for me there are products which resemble the tastes that I like and I can happily put in my mouth without gagging.
Surely you must be able to understand this !!!!!!!0 -

I have to confess that I DO find that hard to understand.
I am a veggie, my OH isn't. I use quorn in cooking, as it keeps us both happy - we get to eat a meal together.0 -
Can I ask anyone who has eaten the beef peices a question please. I have never tried them but I really like the chicken peices. Do they taste a lot like beef? I know that sounds silly but I haven't eaten meat in 18 years but I remember not liking beef in the first place but I fancy the idea of giving them a go. I think it's the fact they are selling them as tasting like beef that if putting me off!0

I haven't tried the Quorn ones but I don't think the Frys ones are too meaty, certainly not when you've added them to a stir fry with sauce. I'm not the best judge as I've been veggie as long as you but I know I don't like products that taste too meaty but I do like these.
With the Frys a little goes a long way, one packet will serve 4 people (and we both have HUGE appetites) so although it's £3-something a packet it's actually not bad value for money.0 -

I'm a bit strange in that I've been a vegi the whole 55 years of my life because I simply cannot eat anything with the texture of meat.
Any of the vegi "meat style" products, sausages etc I've tried are just too meaty in my mouth for me to eat and realy make me gag.
I don't like the thought of animals being killed but I do accept they are part of the natural food chain so can understand people wanting to eat them even though I can't.
The thought of putting rotting flesh into my system does'nt appeal to me either I realy don't think it can be that good for you .0 -
That just shows that all us veggies are not the same. People have many different reasons for becoming veggie which is kind of what I was trying to highlight to the person who said along the lines of - if you like the taste, then just eat meat.MRSTITTLEMOUSE wrote: »I'm a bit strange in that I've been a vegi the whole 55 years of my life because I simply cannot eat anything with the texture of meat.

It's not a simple as that, and I'm sure most of us are really not bothered that some people can't understand it. I just do what I want to do and what feels right for me, no one else. I don't care if people don't get it.0
