  • I'm sorry that you have taken offence at my post Reverbe but I think your perception of what I have written is deeply out of tune with the intent with which it was written. What I said was nothing I wouldn't have said to a friend in your situation. You have chosen to see offence where it wasn't intended.
I've also replied to your pm. ;)

I agree. Your answer was encouraging and you were obviously trying to help. You may not have got all the facts right but at least you tried to come up with some positives and answers:)

Whatever the problem, our (my) family motto is: There is always an answer.

We can actually begin to have fun as we realise we can find inventive ways to see that answer and follow the path to it. We are very lucky in this country when you consider two-thirds? of the world go to bed hungry every night. (I know someone will come up with witticisms about 'not after 12.30 today' :rotfl:etc, but in reality we are so much better off than we often realise)

Expensive face creams - I used to be a total addict to high-end cosmetic creams but since I stopped using them I have to say I haven't noticed a great difference.

Oh me too. I miss Lancôme Primordiale. Nowadays I use one from Aldi and it's very good but just not the same :(

I gave up smoking about six years ago and still miss it.

Have never missed shop bought bread because it's rubbish anyway, I would never go back. I do buy the odd loaf of rye sourdough from the farmer's market though, to treat myself :D

I really miss eating out. In my old, well-paid life in London I used to eat out a lot with friends but since we moved away a year ago I have only been in a restaurant a handful of times, mostly when other people have treated us to a meal.
  • I miss having a life. Since taking on allotment and baking everything from scratch, my home has turned into River Cottage. Now instead of watching daytime Tv i am making soups etc and using up everything I have picked as I do not waste anything. I am saving money on food but do not have the time to spend this on myself.
Oh well at least I am eating very well

:D If your home is River Cottage, is Hugh there? If so can I come round?

    I have given up;

Buying lunch at work - make from home
Going to the hairdressers - wear a wig
Buying magazines - go to online sites
Buying clothes from middle range shops - now shop in Primark/New Look/Peacock
    Buying handbags
Social nights out unless it is pre-planned
    Going to the cinema
Eating out unless it is pre-planned
Buying Christmas presents - just send cards

    I truly miss;

Buying lunch at work - sometimes I tire of having to pre-pack breakfast/lunch for hubby and I
Going to the hairdressers -I miss being pampered and walking out feeling glam!
Not being able to buy more stylish clothes and therefore never feeling I look 'current'
Buying bags - bought my last bag summer 2008
Social nights - I like meeting with friends but do not plan often due to the cost involved
    Going to the cinema
Eating out - I love food!

I know there is a reason for the cutbacks but at times I feel like I am really sacrificing. I have never been a big spender but it is nice to have the choice of whether to buy or not buy. I did not realise having a child would cause such a huge dent in our salaries - ouch!

    Hi all

As I'm on a debt elimination plan I've cut back quite a lot over the years, but one thing I miss is being able to act on impulse: whether it's buying a takeaway or buying a pair of shoes. I feel I'm going against my nature always thinking before buying what I need and it's caused little financial hiccups along the way, but I've not derailed my debt elimination plan.

I'm so looking forward to having my own money again!

I'm with Aril on this one - was FOREVER buying books at the supermarket (all their 3 for 2 or 2 for £10 offers!! *shakes fist*) almost every time I went shopping. Also I bought "brands" and didn't price-check ...just slung it in the basket.

I am one of the few who has replied who HAS changed her life from extravagant to more frugal and has lived on this site for the last few months and learned so much she feels ashamed of how she used to be. I am not in debt, apart from money on a credit card which paid for the IVF which resulted in my twins so there's not a SECOND of regret for THAT "debt". We had to finance it ourselves as the NHS wait was THREE years and then that was put on hold due to cuts.

So, I wasn't slinging expensive purchases on the never-never, but I spent everything I had, didn't save, didn't look for ways to do things better.... but now I do. I actually go to bed on a night excited if I've had an NSD or if I've had a day of batch cooking or found a bargain somewhere!! :D:D

So yes, I miss buying books (am subscribed to the "No more buying books until I've read the ones I've got" topic on DFD) and magazines (gave those up a few months ago too, though I get to read the ones in the staff room at work sometimes).

I do understand that I used to spend to fill a hole but I can see now that it never did, it just put a spade of dirt in for that day and the hole seemed just as big again the next day.

    OS RULES!! :j

i feel sort of left out, as ive never had the disposable income to do most of the things that people are giving up, let alone justify them !
  • Val. Unfortunately Hugh is not here, just all the food. I would soon put him to work in the kitchen.
Sessie. How wonderful it worked for you and you have twins. They are worth giving up everything for. You must feel soo proud. Well done.:T
