My DS has just gone up to year 1 from Reception, except they have put him into a year 1 and 2 mixed class due to ability, but he's distraught that there are "No toys or anything to do apart from woooooooorrrrk mommy!"
The first couple of weeks are always abit strange thinking back to starting pre school then reception; they just have to settle into a routine. Obviously you need to keep your discipline technique up, but have you tried having a casual chat to see if anything is bothering him?"On behalf of teachers, I'd like to dedicate this award to Michael Gove and I mean dedicate in the Anglo Saxon sense which means insert roughly into the anus of." I volunteered at my sons nursery on Friday morning and I can honestly tell you that the children (of all ages up to 4) didn't STOP - they were into everything, painting, playing in the home area, out in the garden. All great ways of learning but I bet some of the younger ones must have been shattered when they got home - Lucky mums having a bit of peace and quiet.
My almost 4yr old was very tired but held out until bedtime!Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx
March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.0 -

Had the same thing with my son, spoke to the teacher about it and this is what she said.
Imagine a spring, full of movement, as the day goes on it gets tighter and tighter, the bell rings mummys outside and whoooooooooosh the spring is freeeeeee. it will settle down after a couple of weeks.
its all new to him, sounds like hes trying hard to be good at school.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0 -

I am so pleased to hear that it is not just my son! My son is always a very self-confident individual and therefore we have had to ensure that the discipline structure is consistent otherwise he will take advantage!.
The behaviour this wk has just been out of character! I will wait and see then and hopefully things will calm down.....
Hi Chivers
I remember when DS first started at big school in the parents presentation beforehand the head mentioned to expect some out of character behaviour at first due to it being such a big change/tiredness etc... so I reckon it's pretty common - hope things calm down shortly for you!0 -
hi OP,
my daughter was exaxctly the same. its all new exciting and they want to `explore` their new surroundings. they also do many tasks at once, say playing in the home corner and nosying at whats going on at the other side of the classroom. their tiny brains are taking all this new information in as well as new friends, new teachers, new rules etc.
my DD has just started yr 1 and is still quite tired when she finishes school, we have a relaxed evening routine. she will play whislt i prepare tea, then eat. after this we sit down together and do any homework and talk about the day. then its bath and i allow her to watch TV for a bit and then its bed at 7pm.
she also HATES yr 1 as there are no toys like another poster son. over the weekend we worked on her spelling and times table homework booklets, she was complaining about sitting down at the table WRITING,, I DONT LIKE WRITING,,NOT MORE WRTING.
the troubles they have eh!!0 -
as others have said, tiredness has a lot to do with it. If he won't nap, try bringing bedtime earlier, until he's caught up on his sleep. School warned us they would be shattered after school for the first few weeks.0

THanks again all. I will gear myself up for the behaviour to deteriorate towards the end of the week and then maybe if I am more prepared for it I will find it easier to deal with. All seems calm on the home front today and has had a lovely afternoon out in Rochester with Granny, Grandpa and Great Grandma!
Thanks again xxThere are times when parenthood seems nothing but feeding the mouth that bites you Peter De VriesDebt free by 40 (27/11/2016)0 -
This is perfectly normal. All 3 of my children did this.
They are tired and have so many new things to get used to at school so they get very tense and they tend to let off steam when they get home because home is where they feel most relaxed.
I'm sure it will pass, so you just need to not accept bad behaviour but also be patient. Finally Debt Free After 34 Years, But Still Need to Live Frugally

it is normal - but some kids more affected than others. my daughter just used to come home and nap. my no1 son went out and played in garden til he ran out of steam and my no2 son delighted in behaving badly! just carry on as normal and he will settle down (eventually). you could try some activity to allow him to let off steam (as he sounds like my no2 son) we used to stop in play park on way home - which i had never done with other two - for ten minutes or so . took a lot of his excess energy out of him and he was more willing to settle into quieter things at home.0
