mystery phone sockets

I am moving home and have signed up with Virgin for broadband, phone and tv. So far the experience has been nothing short of painful- they have messed up the installation date, I still haven't had anything in writing and to make matters worse the attitude of the CS staff has been appalling.

I've put my installation date back a week as my move date has changed and as a bonus it will give me a chance to decide whether I actually want to go ahead with virgin as I'm unimpressed so far.

In the meantime....I have had a look around the house and can't find any phone sockets. I have located an old telewest broadband (now virgin ?) external box outside the house that has a cable going into the wall but on the other side (inside the house) there is nothing there:confused:

I have told virgin this and they have said that the 'installation engineer will sort it out when he gets there and will put boxes in if he needs to'

Call me cynical but I can't believe they are willing to do that for £0. As virgin have been very good at saying one thing and doing another so far I'm underconfident to say the least.

Anyone had a similar issue or knows what would happen in this situation?

Would appreciate some help please!

  • Might take a few visits,
You can't always expect a Virgin to go all the way on the first date.

I had my phone line installed for £0 from cable, this last time and the other 3 times, two times without sockets already being there, this last time and the time before had extension fitted free too.

Had my broadband and TV installed at no cost too (only had TV and broadband at this last address and about 3 years before the cable phone, as they offered me a deal to stay with them).
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

Hi Bex, which company installed sockets for £0?

Birmingham Cable, then Telewest, then most recently Virgin Media.

Virgin will install one socket inside, as long as there is a cable connection in the pavement (which there must be if there is already an old Telewest box) then they will connect you with no extra charge.
In your case it appears that the cable run from the pavement to the house has already been made, so most of the job is already done, they just have to bring the connection through the wall into the house.
Sounds like the previous owner has cut the old cable off where it terminates in the house and concealed it. That doesn't matter, as the install includes whatever work is necessary to bring the cable from the pavement into the house.

Thanks Macman, I was worried I would have to pay loads to get the line in the house.

If I wanted to have extra sockets in the bedroom and kitchen would they do this for me and how much is it likely to cost?

VM usually charge £75 per extra socket, they'd rather you do the job yourself. Sometimes they will offer to do an extra socket free at time of install, though you need to ask at time of order or before install date for them to add to the order if they are willing to do so.

The other option is to use DECT cordless phones.

You could always ask the installer if he'd do you extra sockets as a cash job...

I can't bear to ring them again, they were so awful last week and everytime I call something always crops up that differs from the last time.

Macman, I will ask the engineer if he would be up for a cash job on the side (once I've sussed him out!) and if it's a no go Then it wil be DECT phones for me. I can't afford £75 for a new socket and even if I could I'm not sure I would be willing to pay!

If you feel so negative about VM then why on earth contract with them? Given their level of CS you're not going to feel any better about them in a few months...
