I use old hot dog jars that i have washed and sterilised before transferring all my spices and herbs into them. I have also made my own seasonings, like italian, curry and steak seasonings. They are in a couple of jars too! If I had the money I would buy loads of jars that looked the same but these work just as well.

I just had a very quick count of mine, I have around 60  must count again more accurately

even factoring in the price of a tub/jar it's almost certain to be cheaper in the long run to buy from an ethnic grocer than to buy those little jars from the supermarket

I have a great fajita mix recipe if anyone is interested, it works out at less than 5p as opposed to the price of one of those sachets you buy

here's the Fajita mix, the recipe makes the equivalent of one of those little packets of dry mix you buy & it's used in the same way ... but I make up a larger quantity, keep it in a sealed tub & use roughly 3 Tablespoons to 1lb chicken/beef/pork/veg

    1 Tablespoon cornflour or cornmeal
1/2 teaspoon chilli powder, or to taste, maybe try 1/4 teaspoon first if you don't like things too spicy
    1 teaspoon salt
    1 teaspoon sugar
    1 teaspoon paprika
3/4 teaspoon stock powder or crumbled stock cube
    1/2 teaspoon onion powder
    1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon ground cummin
    1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

    cook as per packet instructions

I like to add a squeeze of lime too :)
  • I recently bought a set of jar measuring spoons from TX max i think, they are long and thin and designed to fit in the jars. like these http://www.amazon.com/RSVP-Spice-Measuring-Spoon-Set/dp/B0000VONY8

We keep ours in their original jar/pot/box, with a label on the top (if not already printed) and then they live in the shallow drawer inside our vegetable drawer (IKEA kitchen). Daren't count them.....we have loads and not just regular ones either - saffron from India, cinnamon from the Seychelles, cajun spice mixes from New Orleans, falafel mix from Tel Aviv - all bought from places OH has visited through his job!
