Baggage allowance with Easyjet

I would avoid sitting in the rows with the orange headrests next to the emergency exit, as the air hostesses make such a fuss about it and it drives me mad.
You can't have hand luggage on the floor if you sit in these seats because it's an emergency exit and they don't want people tripping on bags.
Makes sense to me if it's about safety.
Note that on easyjet the emergency exit row seats have more legroom but are LESS WIDE.
If you are tall and thin this might suit you, but avoid them if you are a "wide" person.
I find easyjet from Bristol absolutely fine.
We were over on our luggage once and they were fine (only a bit).
However I would advise staying within the limits if at all possible due to the risk of being charged.
One tip is to take any old underwear that needs throwing away. Once you've worn it then throw it away and you should have a bit of room for presents.
I heard this tip from a family of 4 and they used to throw away 4 lots of pants which made quite a bit of room.0 -
BTW - on the subject of hand luggage, we also try to restrict ourselves to the limits given (I know they are high with Easyjet).
But one of the problems is the way that airlines handle luggage.
I am now on my 3rd claim for a broken suitcase (and I had to travel 50 miles round trip to the repairers).
There is NO WAY you can put a decent camera in the hold when hard suitcases come back broken about 50% of the time.
I think it's inconsiderate to take too much hand luggage but the airline should police this. It's shouldn't be left to individual conscience.0 -
i think the feeling over hand luggage customers being inconsiderate is that they are somehow bending the rules for their own gain...to me its a lot of effort for little gain
2 hours of humping luggage about departures, dragging it up onto the plane...and with easy jet pre boarding passes, getting on the plane last, then dragging it all off the plane for a walk out of the airport
all for 15-20 mins quicker exit time....if you then have to wait for an airport bus to take you away from the airport..the hold luggage punters could well have caught you up..and that happens time and time again
and the same could well happen back here at places like stansted, the buses to car park wait...its a lottery how long the next bus will be
the more hand luggage customers the better with easyjet...less queues at check in cos of pre boarding passes, and less wait in baggage reclaim when you get there
the hand luggage travellers who pre book will get on last..so hold luggage travellers get first pick of seats and locker space
but as i said i get on last on my flights and that is a lot of times per year and with up to the limit hand luggage with and hold luggage and i never have a problem
the only time i can remember a problem with a hand luggage in locker space is when someone tried to get on last with a guitar!!
thanks to the trend of hand luggage only price reductions in tickets with ryanair...they increased the hold luggage weight limit to 20kg
the inconsiderate travellers in my opinion are families with young children who get on last because they just had to wait at starbucks and buy coffee to carry on the plane and then want to sit together and the cabin crew move people about to accomodate them..as they have to!0 -
all for 15-20 mins quicker exit time....
It's about that from Bristol, but can be sustantially longer at larger airports like Heathrow.
It's might not sound like much, but if you travel for a day and get up at 5.00 a.m. and back at 9:30p.m. then you don't want to wait 15-20 minutes.
NOTE I'm not saying this justifies being in-considerate.
Just explaining why people might want to take hand luggage.
Also I am now sorting out my 3rd claim for broken luggage.
I would rather not put things in the hold if possible.
I usually get the money back but I still have to spend time going to the repairers and shopping for new cases.
If they took greater care of luggage then I'd be more willing to put items in the hold but whilst they come back broken then it's a different story.with up to the limit hand luggage with and hold luggage and i never have a problem
I think it depends on the type of jet.
Easyjet tend to be OK but some of the Flybe jets have smaller space.
The Embraer jets that BA fly from Bristol to Edinburgh cannot fit a "standard" piece of cabin size baggage in.
It also depends what else other people take.
I've been on flights where people have violin cases and walking sticks.
It's shouldn't really be down to people to behave considerately.
The airlines should police it so that it's fair to everyone.0 -
i think it appears inconsiderate when you see people struggling with luggage...but be realistic there just are not problems with luggage space in lockers that you might think they should be, you might not have your bag immediately above your head..thats no big deal
let them struggle...they give the rest of us benefits from doing it.
as for hardback cases...i always use holdhalls , but even then too many trips will ruin them no matter what
you say it is individual conscience....i put it that the check in staff..gate staff...cabin crew have allowed the traveller to carry it on
come on be honest a little shuffling about for a few seconds and eveyone gets their luggage in a locker
its the old thing of someone getting something for nothing when they havent done themselves...in my opinion it aint worth the effort of lugging heavy hand luggage about for a possible time saving gain0 -
Easyjet are very good in my opinion. The boarding system is quite fair, I usually end up in group B which gives me a reasonable choice of seats.
The flight itself is usually fine, the air hostesses are no where near as pushy at selling you things as Ryanair and on late flights they sometimes leave you alone, inviting you to push the call button if you want a drink etc.
As for hand luggage, I also get angry when I am patiently queueing up to board / leave the aircraft only to have some idiot smash a suitcase on wheels in to my legs.
Children on the other hand I can tolerate easily. They usually get on first so do not cause me any issues at all.0 -
the benefit of easyjets hand luggage policy is that the dimensions of the bag/case are the industry standard ones...however within one of the bags we manage to put heavier items which otherwise would take us over the hold baggage thresholds...on a 10 day break it allows us to take those little extras that otherwise we'd have to pay for0

A couple of points about hand luggage..
Easyjet do have probably the most generous allowance for this, but if the flight is full and you're on last..it'll end up in the hold due lack of space (particularly on the 737). If you've tried to be too clever and the bag is too heavy it will also end up in the hold. You must be able to easily place the bag in the overhead locker yourself. The baggage lockers are only stressed to a certain weight and in the event of an abandoned take-off there is a good chance you will end up wearing the contents of the overhead locker. That's where the common sense comes in. If a flight is full (particularly the bucket and spade destinations) there are nearly always a few bags that end up being removed from the cabin and put in the hold.Timmay!0 -
Bella_b wrote:I've flew with Easyjet loads of times. They changed the rule about hand baggage a year or so ago. I think it's quite good. I usually take a large rucksack with wheels, and foldable handle. It's quite big, but they still let me on with it as handluggage. I prefer to just take hand luggage as I hate checking in stuff, and it saves time at the end as you already have your luggage. So you can probably take about 3 pieces of hand baggage or 1 big one with a handbag. Small ones can fit under your seat, bigger ones up in the lockers above
I would avoid sitting in the rows with the orange headrests next to the emergency exit, as the air hostesses make such a fuss about it and it drives me mad. But the seats arent allocated but you can sit where you like. I prefer the front - middle seats because you usually get served first if you want some refreshments and you get a free magazine which is interesting reading. It has good articles and also there are destination guides. Enjoy your flight!
I like the legroom but hate the attention too but see why they need to be fussy.
I wish I could manage just hand luggage. An average day in my life:hello: :mad: :coffee::coffee::coffee::T
