McAffee and Norton are right little...things...so remove from systems.

One note, even if you use the MS or software bundled un-installed, it doesn't remove all of the software.

You'll benefit from an additional registry scan and fix using something such as Registry Mechanic.
Also check the Program Files folder to ensure its removed completely.

They also tend to leave shared .dll's, library's, files etc in the systems folder and occasionally (I've found a few times) under the user profiles in "documents and settings".

Really the only true way to remove them, I've found....is to format completely.

The same goes for the AOL software, what a nightmare.

I decided to go with Sygate instead of Zone Alarm and it told be Realplayer was trying to connect to the internet when I logged on and whether I wanted to allow it.

Why would Realplayer want to do this when I am not using it? Is it a goodie or a baddie? I thought it came installed with my new PC but I'm not sure now?

My subscription has just ran out with mcafee and it seems cheaper to buy 2006 version than to upgrade my current version so what i want to know is if i put the 2006 cd in will it automatically reconise i have 2005 and install ok or will i have to uninstall 2005 as this seems to be difficult looking at your post.

The Mcafee uninstall gives you an option to remove single parts of it on their own. use the add and remove programs option and you will get a screen asiking which programs you want to remove, all the boxes will be ticked just leave spamkiller selected and carry on it will remove it.

Strawb, it is cheaper to buy the new internet security suite I think it is usually on offer for about £20 at pc worldcompaired to the normall price of £50. You should be able to just do the install over the top, setup will detect the existing version and remove it during setup.

Browntoa - my Realplayer was disabled and I have selected not to have any notifications but it still tries to access the internet.

Is this program one that I can live without or is it a commonly used one?

I am also getting another message from Sygate

File Description : NDIS User mode I/O Driver (ndisuio.sys)

    Any ideas what this is?

    Regards

    Jean.

PS How do you paste pictures in messages? I cannot seem to do this.

The fact that good anti-virus programs like Norton, McAfee etc. are harder to remove, is a good thing as it makes the system more secure, which is why they are installed in the first place! These companies provide removal tools, so what's your problem?

The problem is that even when you use its uninstall tool, McAfee doesn't completely uninstall. So when you try do install another security suite (in my case ZoneAlarm) it comes up with an error message saying it is incompatible.

I get ZA security *free* with my ISP (which means, of course, I'm paying for it), but cannot get it to load on my new Dell pc, even though the McAfee free trial has expired and I have done everything I can think of to get rid of the remaining bits that are fouling up my machine.

To add insult to injury, I keep getting pop-ups telling me that I can renew for 'half-price' - two years for £84!!

I have now given up and decided to stay with McAfee - but thanks to the above poster, I have purchased it from My Memory at a fraction of the cost that the Dell-installed software wanted to charge me.

The problem is that even when you follow the normal uninstall routine AND use the clean-up program from the McAfee site, other AV programs can still detect it. I get *free* ZA security with my ISP (which of course means I am paying for it) but cannot use it because it keeps telling me to uninstall McAfee (I HAVE... I HAVE....)

To add insult to injury, I keep getting pop-ups offering me '2 years renewal for half price - ONLY £84!!!). I've given up now and ordered McAfee 2006.

But thanks to your post from another thread, I got it from My Memory, at a fraction of the cost of the 'special offer' from the Dell-installed software.

I agree with albertross. McAfee Anti-Virus Internet Security Suite 2006 is available for only £8.99 from MyMemory, so it's just not worth selling!
