Thinking of moving to the Stoke/Stone/Newcastle U.L area but don't know that area

    I live in Newcastle under Lyme and work near Burslem. Stoke gets a bad rap cos it's such an unusual city. Stoke itself and the surrounding towns are not the prettiest, but they have always been industrial. As such there are thousands of small terraced properties. I would not live in any of the Stoke towns but that's just my personal choice.

    Newcastle is nice - I'm in Wolstanton which has a mix of terraces and large Edwardian properties. Other nice areas, I think are May Bank, Westlands, Porthill then going towards Stoke out of Newcastle Hartshill and Penkhull. Westlands particularly has some very nice properties in your price range and it outside of town. Then you can drive outwards to places like Audley, Madeley, Whitmore and Baldwins Gate to be more rural but still close to town.

    Stone I don't know particulary well but it's a nice town with enough pubs and eateries. House prices are higher there than Newcastle.

    You just need to do your homework really.

    thank you nervousftb and sandc

    I had a look on rightmove at properties around £150k to £200K and there certainly were some nice 3 and 4 bed detached houses there. These sized houses would go for double that here.

    it's just that i met some very nice people from Stone when I was in Sharm el sheikh last week. They said properties were a lot cheaper. So what are salaries like there?
    Mortgage free as of 10/02/2015. Every brick and blade of grass belongs to meeeee. :j
  • A lot lower! Take a look on a few job sites, depends on your area of employment but I'd expect a good 20% lower than where you are at least.

    Depends what you do spirit - if it's a case of relocation they might be more comparable because it's the same company. The problem right now if you are looking elsewhere is are there any jobs to move to. I might get a few grand more for my job down South but then again I would get a few grand more if I went into the centre of Manchester for work.

    It doesn't really matter all that much if you are not going to have to have a mortgage does it?

    Stone is ST15. It is a lovely town and somewhere I would like to live. It's just that bit more pricey. When I bought my house, for example, I didn't have to be in Burlsem, Tunstall, Stoke etc and could afford a bit more for Newcastle but I couldn't run to Stone and that probably still counts (but I'm a two up, two down terrace dweller and there is obviously more choice of those sorts of houses in this area than going south towards Stone).

    I too am a former Stokey living in Hampshire.

    Stoke is very like Southampton some nice places some not so nice..
    Cobridge= St mary's.
    Bentilee = Millbrook

    Look on the outskirts of Stoke towards Leek.

    Endon, Moss Hill, Stanley, Brown Edge,Stockton Brook, Longsdon.Bagnall Light Oaks. Some fantastic houses in really rural locations.. (But if you tell anyone about them i'll have to kill you :p as i'm moving back next year)

    It's as good if not better than the new forest.. and the people are down to earth and easy going.

    ( this is from some one who lived on one of the miners estates in Stoke and who thought Millbrook in Southampton was quite a nice place to live!!!:D !)
    Yes some nice cheap houses!!

    Sometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold...But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow...

  • I lived there for a year, then came back a year later and lived in Freemantle. Never had a problem, I thought everyone was quite friendly. Maybe they were just scared of a northerner ;)
  • We call Shirley Mutant Mile in our house :rotfl:

    It's OK & has been newly designated as a "multi Cultural Hotspot":D
