What is the difference

Could someone enlighten me (for my son) the difference in speed between dialup and a broadband connection of 512kb.

Is there much of a difference. He pays £8.50 for a dial up connection and the cheapest broadband is £15.00 for 512kb.

Is it worth upgrading?

Put it this way, once you have used broadband you will never go back to dial up :D

I helped a friend set up a new pc yesterday on dial up and had to download AVG virus protection. Took some 45 minutes on dial up instead of probably less than 5 on broadband.

£15 for broadband seems a pretty good deal to me plus it does free up the telephone line as well.

OK, point taken. Of all the companies that offer BB for £15, I suppose the next thing is to think of customer support costs, not forgetting the modem.

Think that customer support on most of these providers charging sub 20 quid gets charged if by phone - irrespective of what you pay per month. Generally the faq's on their sites cover most problems and failing that next step wud be to use email to their support. Phone as an absolute last resort.

Bear in mind that once working you probably won't need support anyway cos there really is not a lot to go wrong.
My website has lots of info and photos from various Greek and Canary Islands esp. about walking. My profile has the site address cos not allowed to put it here.

    forgot to add.
metronet support, very good, not premium rate, national rate.

modems are cheap to buy so dont think that getting one from the isp is anything, as you likely paying in higher monthly costs.

and a router is a better option anyway.
