Previous tenants have not paid final gas bill. How will this affect me?
Options
Hi
I have just had a letter from an authorised officer of British Gas. It was originally addressed to the previous tenants but the envelope had the words THE OCCUPIER URGENT in red so I thought I would open it. Anyway it turns out the tenants who left a month ago have not paid their final bill 0f £200 and BG have asked this company to confirm the electricity supply is still in use and obtain a meter reading. Now I need advice about what to do next and need some answers regarding a few points:
1. How do BG want someone to confirm that electricity supply is still being used at this address if I am actually with BG since I move last month and have already paid my first DD payment to them.
2. What will happen if the tenant doesn't pay? Will this affect MY credit rating? I am about to start looking for my first house and that will not be good.
3. What should I do now?
Any advice appreciated. Thanks.
Nadia

When did you move in? It sounds like you've not notified them and the old tenants haven't closed their account so the bills are continuing in their name's. Simply call british gas and let them know when you moved in and give them your opening reads, it will not effect your credit rating.0

Credit ratings have not been against houses for many years, only against the person. So as long as you're paying your bill, your credit score won't be affected.0

Do you have your readings from when you moved in? Have you contacted BG with your moving in date and your readings?Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0
