Go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management.
This lists all the drives currently visible to XP. Your DVD drive should be visible, but may not have a drive letter associated. Right-click on the drive and select 'Change Drive Letter and Paths' and give it a letter (D: is the obvious one.)
If the DVD drive is not in the list of drives then go to System Properties (right-click My Computer and select Properties) -> Hardware -> Device Manager. Your drive should be visible beneath DVD/CDRom drives.
If it is not visible there then have a look in the BIOS (F2 shortly after the boot sequence starts.) If it ain't there then you have a problem!0 -
for the disk management you can also type diskmgmt.msc at the command line. For the device manager type devmgmt.msc.0

drive d isnt showing in disk management or computer management
do you think i need a new drive?0 -
Is the optical drive properly slotted in?
Take it out and push it in again

In Device Manager, right-click DVD/CD-ROM drives and click Scan for hardware changes. Then see if it has shown up.0

Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

You obviously still got power going to the unit as the drawer opens/shuts.
I'd be tempted to go in the p.c (slide off side panel) and pull the IDE connector out of the drive and re-seat it.
If you do this make sure the red line down the flat IDE cable is closest to the power cable. Push it in slowly, square-on.0 -
i have got exactly the same problem on my pc but with 2 disc drives cd- rom and dvd rw.have tried all the above sugggestions and they still wont work!! any other suggestions?:hello: :j0

FG,
have you just put an extra drive in, or were they always there, and just stopped working?
If you have just added a drive, you need to make sure that the jumper on the drive is set correctly, to either cable select, or slave, or master, and you have to enable the drive detection in the bios.
Cable select should automatically detect whether it is slave or master (if your pc supports CS), master is the drive on the end of a cable, slave is the drive on the middle connector.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0
