If you do happen to get bored with returning empty envelopes / circulating junk between companies / billing companies for your time taken to reply ;) Try:MAILING PREFERENCE SERVICE

    Quote from website:
    'What is the MPS?

The Mailing Preference Service (MPS) is a free service set up 20 years ago and funded by the direct mail industry to enable consumers to have their names and home addresses in the UK removed from or added to lists used by the industry. It is actively supported by the Royal Mail and all directly involved trade associations and fully supported by the Office of the Information Commissioner.'

I have cut my junk mail out almost completely.

I have signed up to the MAILING PREFERENCE SERVICE. The trick here is not to fill in the Royal Mail leaflet they send after registering, asking about your interests etc as they just put your address on further junk mail lists. Also, remember to list all the names of people living at the address, including shortened names and initials, and maiden or changed names.

I have also got the people who previously lived in our house to sign up to the service to cut out their junk mail coming to our address.

I have also just registered with DOOR TO DOOR OPT-OUT (Royal Mail, Room 130, Wheatstone House, Wheatstone Road, Swindon, Sn3 5JW, this should be Freepost!; but worth a second class stamp) which should stop the unaddressed junk mail the postie puts through the letter box when delivering mail.

Incidentally, I have also cut out the cold calling telephone calls by registering with the TELEPHONE PREFERENCE SERVICE (TPS). Once in a blue moon, if one gets through, I ask them where they got my telephone number from as I am registered with the TPS, and they put the phone down on me !

I also had to register on the FAX PREFERENCE SERVICE as someone was telephoning my landline number wrongly with a fax and tied up my line for 10 minutes each evening. Had to argue with the Fax Preference Service as it is only for businesses apparently, but I told him someone thinks I am a business, so he gave in. No more faxes.

Anything else, junk I may have requested, get recycled when read or finished with.

The only area I have not managed to reduce is the junk door to door leafletters put through, ie take away menus, supermarket offers, double glazing, softened water systems etc etc etc.

Anyone got any other tips to add?

    Hi Rach

Try again, I've just been in and had no problems.

What a great site. When I set up all my stuff years ago I had to do it the 'olden way' ie paper forms and telephone calls. Now you can do it all from this site.

Apart from the Door to Door Opt Out, I had to write to the address I have given in my entry above yours.

Hope you can get it to work, best wishes

    Jackie

I signed up with the MPS as well via the web and just added all the previous people who had lived here for whom we still get junk mail - some of them havent been here for over 10 years! ???

Must say it's worked but if I get any in future I will be trying the "send something heavy in the pre-paid envelope" plan! ;D

I just pop in now and then.... :)

Actually Rach, which site did you try?

On the Mailing Preference Service (https://www.tpsonline.org.uk/mpsr/):

Page 1 at the bottom click Register

Page 2 make a selection and click Next

Page 3 put in your postcode and click Next

    and keep following the instructions.

I did not actually get an 'OK', but I did get 'Invalid request has been denied' when I forgot to put in my postcode'.

Hope you have more success with another try.

    Best wishes, Jackie

A friend get's the hump with this.

Depending on his stress levels and the amount of anger he wants to inflict on a company he'll stick the "free post" envelope to an object:
mildly irritated - a small stone
    angry  -  a brick
    fuming - a breeze block.

Apparently the companies that receive the mail have to pay for the extra weight.

    Fantastic.

How do you fit a brick or a breeze block into the post box??

I just pop in now and then.... :)
