Item paid but not received!!

Hi, I'm new here so hope this is posted in the right place.

Basically, I purchased an item online using my maestro debit card (wish i'd used credit card now) and the cash has gone from my account but as yet I have not received it, it is still showing as pending.

The company website looks legit and has lots of references on the internet but when I try and contact them no-one answers emails, the phone number listed isn't recognised and therefore I cant ask whats happening. I assumed it was legit also 'cos it used one of those secure ssl payment things.

I have a postal address so will try writing but don't hold out much hope.

Does anyone know where I stand with this, can I recover my money at all or is it a lost cause?

Thanks in advance.

  • Bit more info please, what was the website and product (if not too personal)
when did you order the item, did you read their t&c's for delivery times etc
  • Hi,

I would not like to name the company just yet as its only been a week and a half, although they state despatch usually in 2-3 days and say they will keep you updated if theres a delay, which they haven't.

I would like to give them the benefit of the doubt because like I say it all LOOKS legit and they may just be slow but.....

Its more for info as to my options really as I can't help having a horrible feeling that I know how this will end.
  • Your item may be delayed because of postal strikes - there were quite a few of these in various parts of the country last weekend and I think it is still ongoing in London.

Also, check your spam/junk mail box in case they have replied to your emails but the answers have gone there (this has happened to me before now).
  • It could be any number of things, postal strikes, losses all sorts. try googling the company name to try and find more site reviews....

well if your emails are not answered and telephone number is not answerable then it sounds very iffy
  • Kill bill that is exactly my point, I realise its not been very long and I am willing to wait but due to the lack of ability to contact them its got me deeply worried.

As to googling for reviews, the company is shacktools.com, have a look for yourselves.

I have tried this and It all looks good to me but I can't find any reviews good or bad, lots of older references but nothing more recent.....and my item is still pending with me £111 down.

Hmm. Two different addresses and phone numbers for Shacktools. One in Oswestry (0845 862 0069), one in Beaumaris (08450 094082). Is it the same company? Might be worth trying both those phone numbers, and writing to both addresses.

Have you checked Companies House to see if Shacktools is registered with them, as the website claims? Companies House has a free webcheck service at http://wck2.companieshouse.gov.uk/9ba9e742968e98d1b1b58336b929416c/wcframe?name=accessCompanyInfo

I tried the search and couldn't find anything for Shacktools but maybe I spelt the name wrong.

The Shacktools website says to allow up to 5 working days for delivery, so they are already well over that. You could ring Consumer Direct and ask their advice (08454-040506). Explain what happened and tell them that you can't get through to the trader, and they may contact Trading Standards. But probably before you do that you should write to them. You could use one of the letter templates on the Consumer Direct website.

You could also talk to your bank about it. Even if you don't have the right to ask for a chargeback (and it seems you don't), the bank might help with advice. Some banks are helpful, some aren't.

If the item doesn't arrive, and you can't get in touch with the trader, and your bank doesn't want to help, you could consider taking them to the County Court but the problem with that is, say you won your case and had compensation + court costs awarded, you would still have the problem of trying to collect the money. Difficult situation.

But maybe the item will turn up after all. I hope so. Good luck.

Looks like they've changed their name to Skimpo and that's what they're listed under at Companies House. See website at https://www.skimpo.co.uk. It seems to be partly a clone of the Shacktools website.

The address, as listed at Companies House, is 11 HIGH STREET, MENAI BRIDGE, ANGLESEY LL39 5EE. You may be ok as it looks like they're not late filing returns -- yet.

Address (as listed on the Skimpo website): Skimpo Limited, Westdene, Victoria Street, Oswestry, Shropshire SY11 2BP, tel 0845 862 0069

Address (as listed on various other websites): ShackTools Ltd, Regent House, Church Street, Beaumaris, ANGLESEY LL58 8AB
    Tel : 0845 009 4082
  • Hi Cleo,

Thanks for the help, I have previously found both sets of phone numbers and address's, both phone numbers are dead.

I have found another tool site with the same contact details (the draper shop.co.uk) so have emailed them but really don't expect anything.

I intend to write within the week and then will follow your advice and contact consumer direct.
