Freezing Grapes???

Just a quickie - got a huge bag of grapes in the market today for £1....they probably won't last long before turning manky, can I freeze them in pots and pop into DD's lunch boxes during the week or will they go a bit watery???

I'm not sure if they would go watery when defrosted, but frozen grapes are really lovely. A bit like a boiled sweet only colder! They are great if you are on a diet and fancy something sweet :)
  • I don't know about grapes, but I freeze blueberries, raspberries and redcurrents and blackcurrants etc when they are in season. They go all mushy when they defrost so instead i just put them in the blender still frozen for smoothies. Grapes might fare better though as they have thicker skins

That's exactly what I was going to say,or words to that effect. My kids love frozen grapes on hot days, but they're rubbish if you defrost them.

I bought from a charity shop a fantatic hard back book called The complete home freezer by Mary Norwak. I paid a whole 40p for the book.

It tells you how to freeze everything from cucumbers (yes), eggs and even grapes.

It says to pack in 30% syrup and to defrost at room temp for 2 and half hours. The syrup is 7oz sugar to 1 pint of water. Max quality storage 12 months. Does not say how they come out though.

It is old book published in the 70's. My mum had a copy and I bought my own. It is great.

I use frozen grapes as an alternative to ice-cubes in glasses of wine on summer day picnics.
Ever wonder about those people who spend £2 apiece on those little bottles of Evian water? Try spelling Evian backward.

I tried freezing grapes in pots, took themout in the morning and straight into her lunch box thinking they would defrost by lunchtime and be fine, but when they defrosted they were brown and manky so she didn't eat them. I was so pleased with the idea - I thought I was being unusually organised!
