Checking the specs available on the Internet, your motheboard has 2 USB ports onboard and 2 USB ports using cable but they're all USB version 1.1 and not USB version 2.0.

I checked through the manual for this MOBO (available online at Gigabytes website).

The two onboard USBs are USB1. The USBs available through the cable definately said they were USB2.

Downloaded the manual, yes, you've two USB connectors there, called USB1 and USB2 .. but this doesn't mean that you've USB version 2.0. It just the numbering used by the manufacturer to identify the ports number. Usually the one away from the power connector will be connected via cable to your front case USB ports.

BTW, when we're talking about USB version 2.0 here .. we're talking about the new higher speed USB specification .. this has nothing to do with the software, nor the number you found printed on your motherboard.

Yes, you could be right there. I just went back to the Gigabyte site to check through the specs of this board. It looks like both USBs are the slower USB1 (bl00dy confusing manual).

This would point to this board needing a PCI card to install USB v2.

USB support is purely a hardware issue, your motherboard either provides USB 2.0 or 1.1.
    (2.0 being backwarc compatible).

The software issues are....software issues, as in accesibility to the hardware, therefore its not the PC thats at fault but the software enviroment.

So, yes, it would appear you'd benefit from a PCI card.

Although, you may want to check to see if your BIOS is the latest revision to avoid any potential conflicts with new hardware, etc.

    hi peeps,
Thank you all for your efforts to get some perspective on this as their manual is a bit short on detail for a newbie like me to make much use of.
By the way, where has the Thank You button vanished to.Thanks, tweeter.

Thanks for all the info folks - Our PC is about 5 years old now - a Tiny one. Will have to open it up to see whats in there when I get home. Its got 2 ports on the front and 2 on the back, Service Pack 2 is installed and wjen I connect any USB device (PSP etc) I get a pop-up saying this device can perform faster.

So I need a PCI card then.
