It's a shame that you don't get a mains charger for it. Because the battery is totally flat you have to charge it from the mains to get it to work. The Nanos don't come with a mains charger either. Luckily we had one with the 20 gig but it's mean cost cutting not to supply them.

Not having a mains charger gets worse if you update the firmware because you have to plug it into a mains charger to finish the update process. Is this bizarre or what?
  • I also didn't get a charger, so mailed apple to say so (as you need a mains charger if you ever restore the firmware) and they sent me one.
  • Thanks for the info and I am not sure if this is the right place/appropriate to post this, however I am sure someone will tell me if it's not and therefore I appologise in advance.

I thought I would give you my opinion and experience with ipods.

I purchased an Ipod 4gb this time last year, brand new from the ipod store in Regent Street. After six months the battery was no good and would not charge properly or hold the charge kept saying no power remains.

I had been using/charging it correctly and used ipod updater.

It was still under guarantee so I went back to the ipod store and they replaced it for me with another new one.

Guess what same problem occured again about six months later but now out of guarantee so completely useless.

This has happened to other people I know so personally I would not buy another ipod. But this is my personal opinion and I am sure others have no probs.

You might find that you have a new 1 year guarantee from the time you obtained the second ipod. could be worth checking, by asking for advice on this site, consumer advice shop or local trading standards and then get back to Apple once you are armed with the knowledge
