resulting in them charging me a fee off £35.
when I got a letter stating I was going to be charged I was bemused, as at all times as far as I was concerned there were enough funds to cover the direct debit of £19.47.
On Thursday 4th August I returned a faulty item (worth £30) to Asda, the cashier made a mistake and refunded me twice, therefore she charged my card £30 to correct the mistake. -74.26 + 60.00 -30 = -44.26 therefore I still had £55.74 remaining of my £100 overdraft, enough to cover the £19.47 direct debit to be taken on the 5th.
Halifleece are claiming that because £30 was taken from my card it meant that there weren't enough cleared funds in my account to cover the direct debit.
If that's the case, then why did they authorise a payment that would have took me over my overdraft limit, yet refuse to make a payment on a day there was £55.74 cleared in my account?

Halifleece are being complete !!!!!!!s and won't refund the charge and say I should take it up with Asda.
Are Halifleece trying it on, or should I take it up with Asda? As you can see on their statement at no point is there not enough funds available to cover the £19.47 direct debit on the 5th:mad:
Any advice is appreciated!

£30 is almost certainly below the floor limit to obtain authorisation. Are Halifleece trying it on, or should I take it up with Asda?
It seems Halifax are damned if they do and damned if they dont in your eyes. Asda put through a transaction that earmarked a withdrawal against your account. That reduces your cleared funds. So, when the direct debit came in you didnt have enough cleared funds to pay it.
Had Halifax paid the direct debit and the credit not arrived then you would be over your limit. So, not being mind readers they took the action based on the information available to them.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). Unfortunately it is the way refunds and debits works on cards in shops. Unfortunately, retailers do not refund the same as when they take money for goods which lead to the issue.
You can reclaim from Halifax.,0 -

I think you've misread my post?
I'll break it down.
I had -£74.26 in my account until Asda added £60 (they refund £30 twice in error), then took away £30 ergo I'm £30 up, or £-44.26 out of £100 over draft - enough to clear the direct debit of £19.47.
-£74.26 + £60 (refund in error) = - £14.26
Assistant realises the mistake then charges £30 to my card: -£14.26 - £30 = -£44.26 - at no point was there ever insufficient funds to cover the direct debit. Halifax would have had the instructions from Asda to credit my account for £60, then to debit my account for £30, i.e they knew there would be enough funds to cover the direct debit. Can you honestly not see they're trying to pull a fast one?0 -
hope you get this resolved.in my experiance a purchase/withdrawal comes out quicker than a refund.maybe this has been the case with yours.0

They were both credited and debited on the 5th though. I'm being swindled here through no fault of my own.0

problem here is the dd would have tried to come out before the credit/debit was processed. the funds have to be clear in the account the working day before with halifax accounts so if they cleared on the 5th it was too late. I would chance your arm with asda and see if they will refund as it was technically thier error.would love to win an ipad!

The point is not when the transactions were posted to your account, but when the funds were earmarked, as previously pointed out.
Refunds are (presumably) just posted a few days later, as transactions are, but no earmarking credit is made.
But as soon as you spend the money, it's earmarked against your available funds.
So, this situation is an unfortunate consequence of Asda's mistake in debiting you twice. It certainly isn't Halifax's error.0 -
I think you've misread my post?
No. When the ASDA 2x£30 transactions were made, that would have reduced your cleared funds by £60. The refunds they put through didnt increase the cleared funds. So, when the D/D appeared, you didnt have the cleared funds to pay it.
Hence ASDA's error left you short of cleared funds in the account.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only.
