Natwest could offer full authorisation cards (Solo) or full debit cards (Maestro) to 'full style' bank accounts.

Or as they will be doing from next week, full authorisation visa debit and non full authorisation visa debit :D

Eventually when technology is up to speed everything will be authorised, so in a few years it will make no difference. Also the CGC is going in a few years too so again it is likely we will all be on a level playing field. There is talk of even removing the card itself and the chip will be read from your watch or phone!

Exactly, I think the reason for authorisation stems from the visa network, in that Maestro is processed in the UK using the old JCCC (joint credit card company) systems, i.e. Switch. As such, chip and pin does not work and that is why the old floor limits were used to pre-auth a card for say £1 or something.

With Visa, the systems are more up-to-date and so authorisation is now made at each POS.

With regards to using your phone/watch - lol..... surely that will just add to the crime rate? i.e. muggings/robberies etc? I dunno how I feel about that, i've watched a few futuristic films (not star trek lol) and to be honest always thought it was a bit weird.... imagine it, in the not too distant future our great, great, great, great grandkids will be flying to work in their hover-cars :rotfl::rotfl:

Ah, Back to the Future one of my favourite films, I think in the second one they use your fingerpints as a way of ID'ing people for everything. Not such a bad idea.

  • They are not the same mate

Full Auth Card (- Old style solo/electron)
This will request authorisation before allowing the sale to proceed (to check for funds). This means that if you were on a plane wanting duty free, on a train buying a ticket or at tesco petrol pumps, you'd be declined the sale because the terminals are offline and cannot provide authorisation.

I've used my lloyds basic visa debit and my halifax visa electron from the cardcash account at both tesco pay @ pump and onboard the train.

I use the lloyds visa debit at either tesco or asda all the time and always pay @ pump at both.

You do not use electron at Tesco pay@pumps - noone does cos they do not accept it! Proof?

    http://www.tesco.com/help/grocery/#20
We accept the following method of payments:
Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Maestro, Solo, Delta, Clubcard Plus.
We don't accept Electron cards, cash, cheques or paper vouchers/coupons.
If you do have an Electron card please check with your issuing bank as they can upgrade your card to allow you to shop online with us.

I don't just say these things for the fun of it, it is proven and confirmed by the banks and all works on BIN refs. Trust me, you cannot and do not use electron at Tesco petrol pumps - I mean the actual pay at pump, not in the kiosk!

As for lloyds, again cannot be used at tesco pumps nor on trains as both are offline terminals. If you check the usage within the terms you'll see that it clearly states that authorisation must be obtained or the transaction will be declined, authorisation is a condition of these accounts so they do not just let anyone go overdrawn on them.

Tesco pay@pumps, for the record, deduct a £1 authorisation fee - they do not deduct the whole balance. Full auth cards do not and will not be accepted at the actual pumps. You would have to go into the store.

  • Using a Visa Electron to book flights with Ryan Air and Easyjet etc. doesn't cost any additional booking fees, so there is def. a case for still having them...

Lol, assuming you like travelling 5th class of course ;) I'd rather spend a few more pounds and fly with a proper airline.... but then I do tend to spend a lot of time watching these silly docu-soaps (the wife) which show just how shoddy they really are!

  • I,m very happy with a basic bank account (yorkshire cash transactor).I also have a Nationwide flexaccount and Halifax electron card for hols however my wages go into the Yorkshire and direct debits and standing orders go out,no need to worry bout a visa or maestro facility being abused by thiefs like 3 credit cards I,ve had.

My wife used to have a basic Clydesdale bank account, they were all "upgraded" to maestro but you would only be able to lift cash at branches if you do.

Without sounding big headed I could prob be accepted for any high st account,I,m happy with what I,ve got so hope it doesnt change.
I have a deep burning indifference
