Laptop Battery charger

This is the 3rd charger im going to have to get and my laptop isn't even 2 years old now anyone any idea why it keeps stopping to work, i need to mess around with the wire to get it to charge all the time and cuts off all the time. Going to have to try and get another one.

  • Do you have to mess around with the wire at the back of the laptop or at the charger end? if there has been any pressure sideways on the connector it can distort the contacts in the charging socket (pulling the cable tight while its plugged in or wrapping it round the laptop will do this) so that you have to wiggle the connector, then the more you have to bend it to get it to work the more it will bend the charging plug contacts, this becomes a vicious circle and finally the charger stops working (although it is actually still working its just not making contact)

At the laptop end where it goes into connect, i was also wondering if its because theres alot of hot air coming out at the side where the charger connects right next to it and its really warm is this doing anything to it?
I don't wrap the wire around the laptop or anything and its lose when plugged in not tight
  • It sounds like the socket on the laptop is dodgy, where did you get it from and how old is it?

PS they do get very warm, especially if you sit with it on your knee, the vents have a nasty habit of getting blocked so its best to sit it on a tray, or it will suck in all the fluff from your clothes, its even worse on a carpet.

Thank you, got it from Comet and its just over a year old i think
  • If your laptop is getting very hot have you tried opening it up and cleaning out the fan? Mine was getting hot to the point of shutting down, I searched for instructions on line and took the back off to get to the fan. I was shocked at the amount of fluff and rubbish that was stuck. It totally solved my overheating problem. I don't know if this would effect your charger but it is worth a try.

If you are fearless with a screwdriver ;) then check the laptop makers website. They usually post a service manual that takes you step-by-step how to open up and unscrew everything. It might just mean removing a couple of screws to take the keyboard out and that usually gives you access to the cooling fan, Then you can attack it with a vacuum cleaner :) lol

If you can't find it post the make / model of the laptop here and someone should find it for you.

I took it into comet today where i bought it and they are refusing to replace it and its going to cost £52 to replace the charger so im not very impressed considering iv only had it for a few months. Im not very good with computers but ill get my cousin to see if he can get to the cooling fan and clean it out. Thanks for all your replys as i really am useless with computers

I think instead of letting your cousin at it contact consumer direct they will tell you what to do and what they must do.
