Sky - change in quality?

  • I had this problem a while ago. Kept checking connections, making certain that scart hadn't worked loose etc. Sometimes it would come back other times no luck. Put it down to signal, eventually lost picture, put another TV there and it was fine so didn't need to be Sherlock Holmes to work out it was TV. Got a Loewe and was worried about repairs as out of warranty but friendly local guy looked at it and he told me that they had Philips tube and there have been issues with them some connection comes loose on the board and any repair tends not to hold however it has been ok recently and his advice in these tech times was to give screen tap to see if it meets again. Said he could repair but wouldn't be good value.

Long winded way of saying that could well be your actual TV, check manufacturer of internal component and if a Phillips then likely some internal connection is being lost and in medium term plan for new TV

I have had sky+ for ages but have noticed that the quality of the programs has reduced recently. There appears to be a ghosting on the screen when the characters move ... The cynic in me wonders if this is a tactic to move me to HD or could it just be problem with the sky box or TV (but my TV is 2 years old and is HD ready).

If anyone else is having similar issues I'd be interested to know!

What you describe is due to the channels being over-compressed, more channels are added in currently limited capacity, so to squeeze more channels in broadcasters are reducing the bit-rates, the same happens on Freeview and Cable.

Channels like ITV4 and ESPN and ESPN America are terribly over-compressed.

Think of it like trying to fit 4 films on a single DVD, the picture quality is going to be a lot poorer than if one film was on the DVD.

You can help the issue if your TV has digital processing etc - by turning all that crap off.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!
