Is it possible to build a cheap in-car cctv for under £75??

I am looking to try and build a DIY in-car cctv system.

I have a couple of old VCR recorders, and that is about it.

Can anyone advise what other kit I would need, or if I can get a DVR with camera set, that works well (ie good quality video) for under £75.

Cheers

Is this designed to watch the inside of the car, or the view from front and back, for insurance claims, maybe?
Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.

I was thinking of doing something similar.
I have an eee PC 701, and was thinking of connecting a web cam or two to it. Wire to the 12v system, bang in a 3g dongle to upload/live streaming and will be able to record video / keep an eye on things too. All useful for insurance and security! Can connect to the ipod connect on my car stereo too, with mp3/spotify etc for in car entertainment....

The old eee's (2g) probably be picked up 2nd hand for £50 now.

You could be onto something there.
eee pc 701 - or similar
two web cams with high FR/S
It is wireless so can download info when in home network area.

this could work out nicely, need to look a bit more into this......

  • Not cheap to do this however,

The cheapest way I can think of is to build a mini-itx PC, loads of suppliers for this with a solid state drive running something like ubuntu and a couple of cheap webcams (forward view and internal view).

The main problem with a vehicle mounted PC is the vibration, hard drives dont like it at all and will die very quickly, you can get adapters so that you could use an 8gb sd card instead of a drive, with a bit of creativity you could even wi-fi enable it so you can download any of the captured video to our home pc while the car is in the drive, then its just one more step away from becoming an car media system if you add a cheap 7.5 inch touch screen.

I strongly reccomend using linux as the operating system as this is free as opposed to [STRIKE]winblows[/STRIKE] sorry I mean windows and supports most hardware.

    regards
