About 12 months ago I entered into an 18 month contract with BT. I signed up for a package that restricted me to 10 gig of downloads a month and if I exceeded this allowance, I would be charged 40p per gig.
Two months after taking out this contract, I got an email to say that usage in excess of the 10 gig would be now charged at £1.00.
I think this is really sneaky and am wondering whether they can do this?

did they send you out any terms when you joined if yes then read through it to be on the safe side before contacting them or an alternative is to move to a higher package with more bandwith and avoid further costs by being charged on a per Gb basis.0

I was on a £15.00 per month deal for 10 gig per month. The unlimited package is £27.00 per month and I generally go over my allowance by a couple of gig. As I was an existing customer they offered me the same package but for £12.00 per month which I jumped at, knowing that each extra gig was 40p. I didn't get any updated terms and conditions or anything. Thanks for your reply0 -
We've doubled our Option 1 usage allowance from 5GB to 10GB so that you can enjoy doing more of your favourite things online. If you are finding that 10GB is not enough for your needs you can upgrade to Option 2 with a 20GB monthly usage allowance for an extra £4.89 a month.
If you would like to upgrade then please PM me your details.“Official Company Representative

O2 can do -> 7.84 for unlimited broadband, for which you guys are charging x amount extra, charging for bandwidth is so 90s... considering that you guys want file sharers in jail and lobby for more taxes to pay for your pension scheme and fat cat salaries... get real!0

It's actually rather common for ISPs to charge for additional bandwidth on limited usage accounts.
I wasn't personally aware that Broadband was that mainstream in the 1990's.“Official Company Representative

still need an LLU exchange for that price for O2 (otherwise it is much more) - which is differently priced (wholesale wise), so it's easier to offer unlimited (but there still can be a fair use policy in place)....0

Thanks for that. When I called and complained about it yesterday, it was suggested that I upgrade to the unlimited which is more than double what I am paying. I will give them a call and go onto Option 2. many thanks0 -
No problem, if you need anything else please PM me.
Thanks,

Well, I have gone onto option 2 for the price of option 1 but have had to extend my contract for another 12 months. I never go over 20 gig, so should be fine.0
