I Hate Microsoft Outlook

It might be great - I use it to manage my mailing list traffic - but it definitely doesn't do much more than Outlook (unless you're refering to Outlook Express)
Outlook has a calendar, tasklist, decent contact management. You can drag email's to the calendar to create new appointments or to the tasklist to create new tasks.
When used with Exchange, Outlook offers the ability to share calendars, address books, inboxes etc. It also has better support for sync'ing contact details with mobile phones and PDAs
Having said all that Thunderbird is probably all most home email users need, pity there's no easy way to uninstall Outlook Express.
When Thunderbird's calendaring and ability to sync with other devices improves it will probaly become my main email client.0 -

I wonder if it's some anti-virus or other software getting in way.

Wow this is an old thread!
The problem was that I changed internet service providers which meant BT would no longer allow me to send emails through outlook with them. I can only do it through their website!
If you haven't changed ISP's recently then I don't know what the problem could be I'm afraid.

Thanks. I did change ISP ages ago (although may still be on dial-up service with them so I think it may still work if I try it that way). Funny thing is they still allow you to receive the emails via pop on to Outlook but I can't seem to send anything out.0

this won't help, but I have had the same problem since switching ISPs with that error message. However I can send and receive mail (despite error message I mean) but get 2 copies of everything. ISP has said live with it. So I use webmail instead. Post if you do find a solution!0
