Right now I'm doing a full scan with MalwareBytes MBAM but it hasn't found anything yet.

I've got Sygate Personal Firewall on and have said "No" to the svchost thing I had yesterday.

Now here's a different prompt from Sygate:
Generic Host Process for Win32 Services (svchost.exe) is trying to send an ICMP Type 8 (Echo Request) packet to to [192.168.1.65] (seems to be my wife's laptop). Do you want to allow this program to access the network?

Why don't people get a proper supplier like O2 or Be? Sky do an unlimted deal also.

    I can download 10GB in a day.

BT's not a proper supplier for the heavy user and the problem with the term "heavy user" now applies to very very many people (most not even aware of it).
  • it is easy to hack into to a wireless connection using alot of simple free software located on the internet it may take some time but it can be hacked the more you use the internet the faster it will be as the software analysis all the packets sent out in order to crack the encryption and every packet sent out over the wireless has the same wep/wpa key , never tryed it myself but i here it does work
svchost access's the internet to attempt to download automatic updates from microsoft and also to find out if any are available, this can eat up bandwith but not usually that much
svchost is also used to comunicate between networked machines (any other computer/device attached to the router) using redundant bandwith that is not in use by you
at least from what i remember
you will need to check how much the router is dowloading to find out if you have been hacked as this will not show up on any of the machines connected
all i can say is that BT are awful i know and i am not talking just from being a customer and its very rare that you get someone who knows what their doing or more importantly cares alot of the centres are done by outsourcing companys which have very little traning, i would never ever advise using broadband from them directly, however plusnet a company bt own are fantastic in every sense.
BT FON could be causing the problem but i believe bt would be able to detect this as bandwith not used by you, still worth investigating
    good luck
  • however if you are still wondering and want to confirm this and also check that svchost is operating correctly check here for a quick guide

    howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/what-is-svchostexe-and-why-is-it-running/

    (i cant post links yet:))

if you are on a unlimited package and download 10 gb a day from either be or 02 id imagine your line will be restricted at peak times and you will be subject to a fair usage policy
even if you download a lot less than that per day you may even end up being restricted.
  • Thanks for your replies. The immediate "drain" problem appears to have been solved by the removal of BT FON - but it is quite possible that that was not what I was being charged for. I've posted more at:
    http://www.beta.bt.com/bta/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=15330

Does anyone know of a meter that will check the whole network? To continue to have DUMeter on both computers would cost £35.90, and whilst that's permanent rather than annual, it still seems expensive.

    Kind regards

    Peter
  • Oh dear! I unplugged my router and plugged it back in, and whatever it is now seems to have restarted, 40.4 and 46.6 kbps pretty constantly as before. Back to Square 1. BT FON is still off according to th Hub Manager software.

Here's my TCPView readout from earlier this afternoon. Hardly any programs running, though Windows Update might have been.
