I usually buy James Wellbeloved for my dogs and cats, cats wont eat any other type of dry catfood.

It depends on what breed you have. Small breeds may be fully grown at 9 months and it might be OK to downgrade the food to a sort of "maintenance" quality - as all the important bone growth has taken place. Large breeds can keep growing for 18+ months and I would prefer to keep a puppy on a quality food until then.

Autarky is very popular and about £17 for 15kg, however the kibble is quite large and might not be suitable for all breeds. I have a 9 month old Sheltie and she is on Burgess Supadog Puppy as it was recommended by her breeder in the Midlands. It's about £24 for 15kg and the only place I've found it in the south of England is Jollyes.

  • i have a collie x lab, hes 7 months old and weighs just under 20kg, looks abit small compared to labs so dunno how big he will grow???
  • I had a couple of those vouchers but found my dog hates Eukanuba so I'm having to mix it in half and half with other food to use it up, waste not want not !
I am switching to James Welbeloved fish and rice as it suits both my dog with allergies and the fussy one They both really like it !When I mix half and half they pick out the 'old' food and put it on the floor by the bowl then eat the James Wellbeloved and then finish the old food they put to one side, the Eukanuba only get eaten when Dennis is really hungry!
(Beryl other dog was on purina hypoallergenic food which is really boring but she snarfles anything and everything including stuff she shouldn't, she doesn't care about getting itchy until afterwards!)

A chunky male Lab will still be growing. Will probably reach full size at about 12 months, but will continue to "bulk out" until about 18 months.

I had a big female who weighed 30kg without being overweight.

Collies tend to be finer-boned but come in a wide range of sizes! Being a cross it's difficult to judge what his full-grown size and weight will be, but I'd personally keep him on a premium brand for another 6 months.

My Westie has Eukanuba (sensitive skin) and if I ever have to feed him something different (like Bakers) his poo is loose and his wind is disgusting. He would never seem full with the Bakers and he doesn't have that doggy smell with the Eukanuba.

It's expensive to buy initially but over time I feel that I have saved money.
  • As a lifelong dog owner who grew up in a household that owned, bred and showed cats and dogs and now takes in rescue dogs, i will dispell a few myths for u.

The price of the food is irrelevant, don't presume that the more expensive the better. I personally use Wagg which is under a tenner for 15kg, tescos own is also good and similarly priced. One of my vets also said that pedigree can be way too rich for some animals and they be sick causing owners to panic from day one instead of trying another food.
It depends what your dog will eat, just like humans they have their favourites!
A mix of dry and wet food is really best. The dry food is great for teeth and digestion but the wet food (tins etc) gives them variety so they don't get bored.
Leftovers are great to supplement dry food. Many people wont do this and u do need to know about the foods that are not suitable (chocolate, onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, garlic to name a few check on vets on the net (or it might be web) who give out great free advice. But it saves u money, gives them variety and after all pet dogs have lived this way for centuries, how long have we had the modern pet foods, think about it... But if u are not comfortable don't do it and never feed your dog human food until after u have eaten in case it makes them feel top of the pack and they take advantage and believe they are entitled to your dinner!

It's a bit of trial and error but chose something that suits your budget, remembering they grow and eat more, and something they like and that offers a good nutritional content. I also add a dash of olive oil to keep their coats shiny and dogs all seem to love it. Also as labs can suffer from hip dysplasia and joint problems, as many larger breeds do, cod liver oil may be a good supplement. U have a cross so it's likely that this wont be a problem esp being a collie cross as they r the least inbred breed and suffer the least health issues but it's good for them non the less.

I've got a rescue rottie and collie at the moment so i get through some food! The cats and guinea pigs aren't so bad thank goodness!

My dog has Burns, when we got her as pup she was on tinned and really bloated and horrid poo...but we bought burns puppy bites and she was great within a week and now if we give her much deviation from burns she shows the signs like bad wind and impossible poo's to pick up :D

We buy in bulk from ebay at the mo and it doesn't cost any more than supermarket stuff, also read it helps with anal gland emptying naturally coz of the fibre....which is a defo plus as don't fancy any of that
