Friends have cancelled on me coming on holiday...

Most important point is proving your friends 'consented' to you booking on their behalf (ie entered a contract). Do you have anything on email? in writing? on sms? if not you'll have a v hard time making any claim against them unless you have witnesses to any verbal agreement you had with them who are prepared to come along to court.
other than that above advice is good, small claims court or try to negotiate partial refund and/or take someone else....0 -

The small claims court works on the balance of probabilities. Since you can easily prove that you made a holiday booking in their names and paid for it using your credit card, the most probable explanation would be that you are telling the truth. I doubt whether your "friends" would be able to dream up a plausible lie and tell it with sufficient conviction to fool a judge in a face-to-face meeting.0 -
have they paid you any money towards the holiday yet if thats the case then would expect it shows they were going to go and this may workout on yourside0

Yes, they both paid 100 quid each towards it, although my wife gave one of the friends back their 100 quid as we thought we could simply change the name and get someone else to go in their place.
Also, I wrote a letter (recorded delivery) stating exactly what someone on here suggested... explaining I had booked it, their names are on the itinerary, that we had an agreement that the money would be paid back in good time, that they can still take the holiday, acknolwedged reciept of one friend's 100 quid and stated that if the balance wasn't recieved by the date of the holiday, legal action would be taken.
Thanks for all your messages on here by the way, it's helped re-assure me somewhat.0 -
How Random...
After sending this letter to them, i've heard that one of the "Friends" has been to the citizen's advice bureau with the letter and they've told him that they should just ignore it...
Surely the CAB would not advise such a thing knowing that I will be taking them to the small claims court...0 -
But the CAB has long queues for debt counselling and helping people who have lost their jobs, might just be a bit of a whisper.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

I bet the CAB thing is just a rumour to scare you off.
Stick to your guns and go for the small claims court, I know I wouldBe happy, it's the greatest wealth0 -
I'm no legal expert but I agree with JasX that you would probably need some sort of evidence that your friends agreed with the booking. Otherwise anyone with a grudge could book tickets in your name then take you to court to try to get the money from you.
The fact that they gave you £100 towards it may count in your favour. Did they pay by cheque in which case there would be bank records?0 -
Hi Robram,
The CAB will have given options. One option could have been do nothing but the consequences would be court action.

You had an idea it would be nice to go to Vegas with some friends. One night, you got drunk and booked it up. You approached them the next day but they didnt want to go. You tried to cancel but couldnt and you couldnt change the names.
Just what I'd say if I was the ex friend when at the small claims court. First and foremost, surely you'd have to prove they knew about and agreed with the booking.0
