HB - why a cheque

Why is HB sent as a cheque and not done by bank transfer like JSA has the option of?
I have only just received my cheque dated 27th August and have still to received the one for last week. With the strikes it looks like I could be late with the rent.
Hopefully tomorrow I'll get all my late post

Did you supply your bank details with your application?
They sometimes send the first payment by cheque, to speed it up, but assuming they have your details, they should then pay straight to your bank account. Give them a call.Gone ... or have I?0 -
yes they should have all my details0

Some councils only pay by cheque, but this is becoming less common. BACS is cheaper for them to process, and more secure.
Would be worth asking them if they can put you onto BACS payments.0 -
cheque payments!!!! what councils? we havent paid by cheque for years and if its set up to do so it doesnt make a payment just sits on the system.
its probably down to some over-worked [believe me we are at the moment] benefit staff forgetting to enter your bank details. give them a call. There's someone in my head, but it's not me0 -
Have you supplied a bank statement for the bank account in question? If not, they may have paid by cheque in the first instance until they have seen a statement (which they use to verfiy the account no. etc is correct).0

i've seen a few people putting their cheques in their account when I've been at the bank, maybe they don't do anything till you ask.
I'm with Tower Hamlets by the way.
I supplied a bank statement right at the beginning when setting up my claim.0 -
A bank statement isnt usually required - the number is taken from the claimant and if they get it wrong its their own fault.Have you supplied a bank statement for the bank account in question? Unfortunately Tower Hamlets is not yet in a position to pay claimants their benefit by BACS - but it is something we are working on and should have in place next year.0 -
