That's just a bad choice of words on Sun's part. Internally, a laptop is virtually no different to a desktop; it's just easier to carry around.

It is annoying that Dell can get away with removing it from their Office software when they sell you an expensive laptop

They havn't remove Powerpoint from office.
Microsoft sell4 or 5 flavours of office
    Office basic
    Office Standard
    Small business edition
    Profesional
    and Profesional enterprise
    Student/teacher

Each version comes with different applications added most of which very few people will ever use so it isnt reasonable to request everyone to buy profesional for £450 when all they need is word, excel and outlook whihc are all included in Office basic which is £200. unfortunatly you also decided that office standard was too expensive so opted for the version without powerpoint saving you about £160 strange that powerpoint costs about £160 to buy anyway. each part of basic seperatly costs about £100 each so you get 3 apps for £200 which is a good deal the versions further up work out an even better deal but only if you ever use them. The Standard version works out the worst version to buy.

Good luck on the company buying it, they should really especially if your use will only be for work but I doubt it will happen.

Btw if we buy Office student edition (which we can; part time student) would that work for more than 1 PC or has MS only licenced it for one?

    It's licensed for 3 home PCs - http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000BZ54S/qid=1147111775/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_11_1/026-1009041-7234032
