have MS Office; need PowerPoint to edit and read this weekend: please help!

OH has a major presentation to work on all weekend so needs Power Point reader and editor, not just read only.

PC already has Office 2003 but with Word, Excel and Outlook, not PP.

Found a download on this forum for Powerpoint reader but need the full version. Employer may agree to subsidise it if it isn't free (and pigs....) but it cannot be from any illegal download site. open office.org has the whole thing to download and am unsure of how the duplication would affect rather eccentric PC, plus don't need the rest. I looked at MS's site and can't work out how to get PP only.

If anyone can help please, would be most grateful

thank you

All versions of Office 2003 (Standard and Professional) come with PowerPoint, so either it wasn't installed or the shortcut to it is missing. Search your hard drive for POWERPNT.exe - it should be in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\. If it's not there you'll have to install it from the Office CD.

Alternatively, download the Office Standard 2003 60-Day trial - http://www.microsoft.com/office/trial/default.mspx

Installing Open Office wont have any effect on the MS Office already installed.

You can choose just to install the Open Office component thats needed (IMPRESS)

It's a Dell bought in 2003, laptop. They offered Office with or without PowerPoint and publisher; we went for the cheaper one without it.
Have searched hdd and it's definitely not there.
Dell do that quite often: offer 2 versions of Office, one at about 200 quid more than the other
any way I can get it on its own?
What will happen if I download the whole of Office again when already have Word, Excel etc installed? Many NB files in both which I can't afford to lose.

You won't lose any files in My Documents. Office installs into C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\ and C:\Program Files\Common Files\ so any other folders should be safe.

I don't know if the download has a Custom install option; you'll have to try it and see. If so, choose that and just install PowerPoint.

Sounds like you have Office 2003 basic edition it is about £200 for a new retail version. OEM are slightly cheaper.

For other people info Microsoft released a program that will allow you to view powerpoint presentations for free grab it from here

As for you wanting a copy of powerpoint urgently your only legal option is to go buy a copy and it retails at about £160-170 usually if you can find somewhere that sells it on its own. The Upgrade is alot cheaper but I dont think that office 2003 basic qualifies as an upgrade path sometimes they do so you could save a bit of money about 50%.

There is an other way to get software ;)

It's easy to get lost in there, but all you really need to do when you go there is click on 'get openoffice.org' followed by 'Download OpenOffice.org' and follow the on-screen instructions. Alternatively, you can download the latest installer directly from here.

Certain components of the suite rely on Java for their full functionality, but it's not critical that you have it installed beforehand.

I haven't got Java enabled and am not sure how to do that?

thanks guys, I downloaded the PP reader but this laptop is so eccentric we were nervous about installing more Office software
OH has travelled into work all alone to work there & is going to ask the skinflints if they will supply PP to load on its own as it's needed for work at home purposes
It is annoying that Dell can get away with removing it from their Office software when they sell you an expensive laptop (the properly made 5150 in 2003; fantastic build quality, keyboard and screen sadly most unlike what they churn out nowadays)
thanks for the advice. At least we now can view PP jokes sent by mates
    cheers!

Java link says for desktop computers. Is it ok/necessary for a laptop or is there a diff link and/or can I just enable it on this PC? I know this is off topic, another question but haven't a clue

    cheers
