Orange contract to Orange contract - keeping number...

Summary:

I want HTC Hero phone, and could do with a more substantial contract.
Orange upgrade deal is crap (24 month and £166 for phone).
Want to stay with Orange, and keep number.
New customer deal ok (24mo, £97.50 phone), much better via Dial-a-Phone (18 mo. free phone).
Have ordered a free sim from O2, and my current orange contract billing date is the 17th.

Am I correct in understanding that:

1) I can transfer my number from Orange contract to 02 payasyougo and then to my new orange contract. How long will this take? Do I need to top up the 02 at all? Any pitfalls?

2) Even if im meant to give 1 months notice, can I just end the current contract and take the old number once the billing date comes, and just lose that months minutes/texts I have paid for?

3) Can I order my new phone and contract now, use the given number for a bit and then transfer my old number over after a few weeks? Or does it have to be done immediately?

I would have thought that Dialaphone should be able to advise you. After all they are getting a chunk of your money!

yes, two working days each way.

porting the number out ends the contract
