Can a card issued to an under 18 be used to buy age restricted products?

I ask because I was in the supermarket today and my mum noticed she'd left her purse at home.
I offered to use my debit card to pay for the shopping for her to pay me back when we got home.
In the trolley we had some bottles of cider.
It turned out that I didn't need to use my card, as my dad just happened to phone up as he was driving nearby, and was able to come in and pay.
But if I had used my card, would it have worked? Or would it have been rejected when it got to the authorisation stage?

It would work, the card doesn't register age. Obviously the shop staff are responsible for checking your age, not the bank2010 - year of the troll

I have used my car on PayPayl many years before I was 18.
However I am 20 (OMG 21 in 28 days! woo), and I look about 15 now, so I would never have been able to try and buy items above my age range.0 -
The bank dont know what you're buying, only where you're buying it.0

A debit card can be issued to anyone over the age of about 11 - a credit card can only be issued to over 18's - however shops these days seem to want to check that you are over 25 before selling alcohol or ciggies to you!0

I don't think banks would like this.
They might warn people about it, and if they do it again, the account might close?...0 -
Banks are not supposed to nor should they be expected to police cardholders by vetting what they spend their money on. It is quite simply nothing to do with the bank !
It is entirely up to the retailer to police the sale of their own products and that shouldn't be compromised unless laws are being broken.0 -

I heard that banks don't like gambling transactions though...
Also, some banks T&Cs mention about a bank can refuse to approve a transaction if it's dodgy or for whatever reason.0 -
