A technical iPhone question...

OK, here's an interesting one for all the techies out there.
I've got an iPhone, unlocked and using it on 3 UK.
When I turn it on, it finds 3 (3G) without problem. When I go to an area with no 3 signal, it roams onto Orange (2G) fine.
However, when I come back to an area with 3 coverage, it doesn't switch back to 3 - it stays on Orange.
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
