Vodafone Mobile Broadband Users Beware!

I am writing the following information as it should prove useful for anyone with a Mobile Broadband product from Vodafone. Don't fall into their trap.

I have just unfortunately discovered having been travelling outside the EU, the cost of the Vodafone roaming tariffs. Since I last looked at these charges, they have changed considerably. In fact I believe the majority of people would consider them slightly outrageous and definitely unfair.

Instead of being charged per MB, customers are now charged a minimum fee which includes 50MB of data. This is as follows.

Use per day within the EU (Zone 1) - £9.99
Use per day outside the EU (Zone 2) - £30.00

You pay this even if you use a single byte of data!

In the EU simply checking your email once a day will cost you around £300 a month! Outside the EU, it would be around £900 a month! If you go over 50MB you are then charged it again.

Checking email or checking a few web pages will normally not exceed 1MB!

You can verify this information on the Vodafone website (I am not allowed to post the link here as I am a new member but go to 'Vodafone World' and then 'Using your laptop abroad'.

Hotel wifi is normally cheaper than this (by half or two thirds outside the EU). If you are staying in the same place a while, get a local sim card.

Personally as I travel for business a lot, and to different places, I have no choice but to terminate my contract with Vodafone and to use a competitor with fairer pricing. I believe this is an attempt by Vodafone to find a workaround for tighter EU legislation on roaming charge capping.

£9.99 for 50mb a day is excellent value when roaming compared with other networks and if you only use under 1mb they charge you by the kb rather than the daily rate. Compare this with say, Orange who charge £2.94 per mb and you've got an excellent deal.
