I've finally done it! No more landline for me! If you do not use your landline that often, and have only kept it for internet access, then i recommend going on to 3's mobile broadband. i as paying £26-28 per month for landline / 5gb internet allowance. Now i just pay £15 per month and i have increased my internet allowance to 15gb! and can make cheaper calls via pc too.

And of course it costs people far more to call you now.

Still, as you say, you are the winner !

and of course most people in this world have mobiles now, with loads of free calls.

Free calls from my mobile? How does that work then?
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

These calls are not "free" but paid for from (usually) a fixed monthly charge.

The cost to your mobile provider is far higher for a call to another mobile network than to a landline number. Thus, the cost of the package as a whole is higher.

These Mobile Broadband dongles are ok if you are sure that you will stick to the download limit. IF you GO OVER you will be shafted with the BILL!!!!

I pay £20 monthly to Tiscali and get Broadband, Line Rental and anytime calls to 01/02/03 no's and some countries (59 mins and redial)

well with o2 you can get free calls for topping up a certain amount.

and to be honest i cant be arsed to look for other deals, you all know what i mean, and there is no need to be pedantic is there

If you have to pay to get them they cant be free can they?;)
  • ILoveCats, I have a prepaid 3g dongle so there is no chance of exceeding an allowance. I can use as much or as little as I like each month until it exipres or the allowance runs out.

What others have said is right, ringing a mobile is £££. When I only had a mobile, my friend had £100+ bills when he would ring me, now its free each way within BT/Tiscali bundles (59 mins.)
  • Hi, I'm new to the forum - trying to cut costs and, paying £30 a month for mobile contract and £30 for BT landline/broadband, really need to address this. Reading the previous post, I wonder about getting a 3 dongle as well but in my neck of the woods reliability and speed are notoriously bad. Any other options? As most, I use my landline to make 10 calls a month.
