I still can't see whether or not this is an LCD TV (less than 6" deep) or simply a flat screen CRT TV (probably a foot or more deep).

The problem certainly sounds like it is being caused bt a magenetic field near a CRT display. Removing the source and turning the TV on and off a couple of times should clear it as a TV only 3 years old will certainly have a degaussing circuit.

Alternately can you see a UFO on your lawn?

it is a flat screen CRT TV as its quite big. cant think what could be causing it but will go and check now for UFOs:D

I'd suspect the speakers were it not for the fact I doubt the problem coincided with their placement or you would have sussed it yourself at the time.

They are a well known hazard.

I always wear a tinfoil helmet for protection and set my phaser on stun. Whenever possible always get somebody wearing a red sweatshirt to accompany you too - they always get it first.

No UFOs guys!:D the speakers are tiny and not directly next to the tv plus they've been there for over a year anyway. I've unplugged it all and then put it all back together. Its such a shame as the pic is excellent and I could do without buying a new one. I think I'll have to get used to everyone looking like the Hulk:D

It sounds like the degaussing circuit has failed,as previously suggested I had an old CRT with this fault fixed a few years ago it cost me around £60 at that time. Finding a half decent TV repair man might be difficult these days though.
They generally work when the TV is switched on at the mains rather than from standby.

OP should confirm its not an external signal problem by looking at a picture from the internal tuner.

If all fails could try asking these two:

    There are some ideas here...

    http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/182182

... but they are probably mostly impractical. The last one mentioned using an electric drill will probably stop you getting a green picture though if you aren't really careful.

A hunt around may come up with some other ideas. The trick is thinking of some everyday item that produces a fluctuating magnetic field.

As a throwaway idea putting the screen right up close to another TV with a working degaussing circuit and turning that on and off may do the job.....

I turned it on this afternoon and the picture has improved alot - just a slight tinge now in the corners:j maybe all the plugging and unplugging worked:confused: havent a clue but I wont rush out and buy another just yet;)

kiwibreaks - thanks for the ideas - bit technical for me but I'll pass them on to my other half.
