MONEY MORAL DILEMMA. Would you contribute to a stranger’s train ticket?

  • What does she look like?
  • :rotfl:I did exactly this - got on the wrong train a few years ago and didn't have a beasn on me but the guard gave me a ticket - took my details and I had to pay the tenner by post so it's obviously changed. No !!!!!! volunteered to help me out them:rotfl:

However - these days I always have some sort of plastic on me, plus cash for the kids so I'd hope it wouldn't happen now.

Of course I would, it's only a tenner and I remember the day I was poor and penniless.

    .

10 pounds is quite a lot of money, so I doubt I would just hand it over to a stranger who hasnt done their researvh properly. However, if its late at night & they are about to kick her off the train in the middle of nowhere then I would give the 10 pounds
  • Surely most folk these days would have another method of payment on them besides cash?

I wouldn't be keen on handing £10 over to a stranger, it's a lot of money.

  • No brainer for me, of course I would. If I'm abroad I've always got a few extra £/$/€'s with me so I'l hand it over.

My response would depend on a few things - 1) If I thought she was genuine, polite and also non-abusive to the ticketmaster 2) If I though their mistake was genuine. If I thought she was, and genuinely in distress yes, so long as I had the cash, I would help her out as best I could, by giving her the money and if I spoke the local language to help her out that way too. I would ask her not to pay me back but ask her to donate the money to a charity (of my choice). If the train journey was a long one I'd then probably sit down and have a chat.

yes, because the money isn't going to her so she gains nothing, I would give the money to the ticket inspector directly.
  • Doesn't matter whether English. Of course I would!
  • Yes, I would contribute.
This happened to my friend in France, who's English.
Nobody helped so she assumed that people didn't understand English. The ticket collector let her off in the end but was angry. She later heard a women speaking in English a couple of seats away.
  • of course yes, and any foreigner who's in a tricky situation abroad deserves help, not just because they're British or your own nationality!
If you understand their predicament and can help, it doesn't matter where they come from!
I've been helped by total strangers in the past, it's made me a happier and more trusting person.
